Synopsis

AN INSTRUCTOR IN AN SMA TWIN LET HIS STUDENT BEND THE LNDG GEAR IN A XWIND LNDG.

Narrative

XWIND LNDG WITH THE STUDENT. FINAL APCH SPD WAS ABOUT 5 MPH FAST. A 7000 FT RWY STUDENT LNDG WITH A L QUARTERING HEADWIND. THE STUDENT TOUCHED DOWN; PULLED BACK AND THE PLANE BEGAN TO BALLOON. THE WIND BEGAN TO DRIFT THE ACFT TO THE R AND I; THE INSTRUCTOR; BEGAN TO GAR BEFORE TOUCHING DOWN AGAIN. WHEN RAISING THE GEAR; IT WOULD NOT RISE; WHEN LOWERING THE GEAR; IT WOULD NOT SHOW 3 GREEN LIGHTS. THE R MAIN WAS UNSAFE. 3 INDICATORS WERE TO GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT; THE R GEAR LIGHT MISSING AND THE THROTTLE HORNS. CALLED THE TWR; TALKED TO MECHS ON THE RADIO. BEGAN TO TRY ALL GEAR MANUAL EXTENSION SYS TWICE AND THE GEAR STILL WAS UNSAFE. FOR THE NEXT 2 HRS I DRAINED FUEL THROUGH THE XFEED DRAINS UNTIL LNDG WITH 10 GALLONS ON EACH SIDE. I MENTION I WOULD DO 2 FLY-BYS BEFORE LNDG. I REQUESTED THE INACTIVE RWY TO AVOID TYING UP THE ACTIVE 6-24. THE WIND WAS 150/08 AND I LANDED ON RWY 13. FIRE TRUCKS WERE STANDING BY. I DECIDED TO FEATHER AFTER IN GND EFFECT AND I REMAINED CLOSE TO THE R SIDE TO AVOID TKOF RWY PARKING. LNDG WAS SMOOTH. THE R GEAR WAS SUPPORTIVE AND BEGAN TO FALL. THE PROP STRIKE OCCURRED AND I CAME BTWN 2 RWY LIGHTS. THE PLANE DRIFTED IN A TURN FOR 180 DEGS. I SHUT THE PLANE DOWN AND SECURED ALL SPARKS AND SHUT OFF FUEL AND PROCEEDED TO EVAC WITH THE STUDENT. NO ONE WAS HURT AND ACFT DAMAGE WAS MINOR; PROP STRIKE; AND GEAR; AND THE REAR STABILIZER HAD SOME BRUSH OFF OF PAINT; THE WING WAS DAMAGED BY THE GEAR ARM COMING THROUGH THE WING NACELLE.
