CRJ-900 Captain reported a hard landing when the rate of descent was not reduced during the landing flare. There were no injuries; the aircraft taxied to the gate; and a write up was sent to maintenance.
Flight ZZZ to ZZZ1. We were on a visual approach backed up by the RNAV Runway XX approach. The approach to landing was normal until about 30 feet when the aircraft rate of descent increased to approximately 500-600 FPM and no corrective action was made to arrest the descent rate. The aircraft power reduction was commenced at 50 feet with idle power at 20 feet. The aircraft landed in the touchdown zone with a descent rate of approximately 500 FPM. The aircraft made a normal rollout and turnoff to taxiway. No damage was suspected with normal taxi to gate. No crew or passengers indicated any injuries. An Aircraft Maintenance Log (AML) write up was made. Dispatch and Maintenance Control notified.Cause: The aircraft rate of descent was not reduced during the landing flare. The Captain failed to call Sink ___"; that may have alleviated the higher than normal descent rate at touchdown. The shorter than typical runway length of 6301 feet. The First Officer indicated that he recently completed recurrent simulator training."
