SMA COMMUTER CLRED TO FOLLOW WDB TO VISUAL APCH AND LNDG. 2 WDBS IN AREA; SIGHTED WRONG ONE. REQUEST PARALLEL RWY.

Narrative

FLT WAS MRY TO LAX. I WAS THE PF; MY FO WAS THE PNF. WE WERE XING THE SMO VOR; AND APCH ASKED 'IF WE HAVE TFC 1 O'CLOCK; WDB Y 2500.' FO REPLIES 'TFC IN SIGHT.' APCH SAYS 'I'M SORRY WDB X; DSND TO 2500 FOLLOW THAT WDB X TO 24R. CLR VISUAL. FO REPLIES 'WDB X IN SIGHT 2500 FT; FOLLOW WDB X; CLRED VISUAL 24R.' I STARTED MY DSCNT; LEAVING 5000. I WAITED FOR THE WDB TO BE ABEAM US BEFORE I TURNED BASE LEG. I WANT TO GIVE US SOME SPACE BTWN THE WDB AND STAY HIGH TO AVOID WAKE. I TURNED FINAL. THE WDB WAS TURNING OFF 24R ABOUT 2 DOTS HIGH THEN HANDED OFF TO TWR 133.90. LAX TWR SAYS 'XXX ARE YOU FOLLOWING THAT WDB.' FO REPLIES; 'YES; XXX.' TWR SAYS '11 O'CLOCK LOW. WE WERE ABOUT 500 FT ABOVE AND 1/4 MI BEHIND. FO REPLIES; 'WE'RE FOLLOWING THAT WDB. INSIGHT; WE NEED 24L.' TWR SAYS 'CLR TO LAND 24L.' WE LAND W ITH NO PROBLEMS. LAX APCH GAVE US THE WRONG WDB OR WE SAW THE WRONG ONE. WE DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE 2 WDBS. APCH SHOULD HAVE TOLD US AND GAVE A LANDMARK TO PICK UP THE WDB. IF I WAS LOWER IT COULD'VE BEEN A PROBLEM.
