Synopsis

AIR TAXI INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF CROSS RWY ON LNDG. BLOWS TIRES WITH HVY BRAKING TO DO SO.

Narrative

ON APCH TO BUR INTL ARPT CROSSED FIM VOR AT 9000 FT THEN GIVEN VECTORS FOR ILS 8 IN BUR. CLOSE DISTANCE TO ARPT REQUIRED STEEP; FAST DSCNT FOR VECTORING TO THE ILS. WAS CLRED TO INTERCEPT AND USE THE ILS TO LAND ON RWY 8 (OVER 6000 FT). APCH SPD WAS 120 KTS IAS (NORMAL SPD) 2 MI FINAL. AFTER SWITCH TO BUR TWR WHEN ABOUT 1/2 TO 3/4 MI FINAL; TWR REQUESTED ME TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 15 (AN INTERSECTING RWY). I ACKNOWLEDGED. VISIBILITY WAS POOR BECAUSE OF HAZE. AS I WAS FLYING DOWN TO THE RWY; I REALIZED THAT I COULD NOT SEE THE INTXN AND I DID NOT KNOW FOR SURE HOW MANY FT OF RWY WERE AVAILABLE. AFTER TOUCHDOWN; I USED THE BRAKES TOO HARD AND BLEW BOTH MAIN TIRES. ACFT REMAINED UNDER CTL. AFTER BLOW OUT; ACFT WAS STOPPED WELL BEFORE RWY 15 ON THE CTRLINE. PAX WAS UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM UNTIL I SHUT DOWN THE ENGS AND HELPED HER OUT OF THE ACFT. REMOVAL OF THE ACFT FROM THE RWY TOOK APPROX 1 HR BECAUSE NO REPLACEMENT TIRES WERE AVAILABLE AT BUR ARPT. I BELIEVE THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF TWR OR APCH HAD INFORMED ME EARLIER OF THE 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 15' SO I COULD PLAN ON LNDG SHORT. TWR WOULD HAVE INFORMED ME OR IF I HAD REQUESTED THE LENGTH OF RWY AVAILABLE TO '15 INTXN.'
