Synopsis

AN MLG CREW MAY HAVE FLOWN INTO A MIL ATA AFTER TKOF FROM PHX DUE TO NOT TURNING TIGHT ENOUGH.

Narrative

A NORMAL TKOF WAS MADE IN AN MLG ACFT ON RWY 8; FLYING A PICAH DEP. THE DEP REQUIRED A TURN PAST THE VOR (SRP) AT 4 DME TO A HDG OF 190 DEGS. THEN AT 4 DME THIS TURN WAS COMMENCED. AT THE SAME TIME THE DEP CTLR ASSIGNED A HDG OF 200 DEGS. COMPANY PROC REQUIRES NORMALLY 15 DEGS OF BANK UNLESS REQUIRED FOR ABNORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE CTLR ISSUED THE 200 DEG HDG; HE ASKED THAT WE TIGHTEN THE TURN. AT THIS POINT I INCREASED THE BANK TO 20 DEGS AND STARTED SLOWING THROUGH 230 KTS TO A TARGET OF 210 KTS IN ORDER TO DECREASE THE TURN RADIUS. THE CTLR THEN STARTED QUIZZING US ABOUT AIRSPD AND WHETHER OR NOT THIS WAS A NORMAL TURN. I EXPLAINED THAT AS FAR AS I KNEW THAT THIS WAS ALL NORMAL. HE THEN SAID THAT THE TURN WAS TAKING THE ACFT INTO WILLIAMS AFT AIRSPACE. I SAID THAT I HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING THAT AND THAT IF HE WOULD HAVE COMMUNICATED THAT TO ME I COULD HAVE USED MORE BANK (UP TO 30 DEGS). HIS VOICE INDICATED A MEASURE OF DISPLEASURE. IF TURN RADIUS IS A PROBLEM FOR MLG ACFT ON THIS DEP; THEN IT SHOULD BE NOTED ON THE DEP CHART OR ACFT SHOULD BE INSTRUCTED BY THE CTLR TO KEEP THE TURN INSIDE A CERTAIN DME ON THE VOR. THE PICAH DEP; AS DEPICTED; HAS NO SUCH RESTRICTIONS.
