Synopsis

Air carrier captain reported GPS jamming and spoofing over Myanmar airspace.

Narrative

I returned to the flight deck from my break in the PRM and discovered that the First Officer and Relief Officer were working a problem and communicating to ATC regarding reduced navigation performance. They had received EICAS messages UNABLE RNP; DATALINK LOST; ATC FAULT and TERR POS over MDY. RNP 2 was displayed on both sides; but the captains ANP was 6.87 and the first officers ANP displayed 15.3. Verify Position was displayed on the FMC. LNAV began turning left. The magenta line disappeared momentarily. Position could not be verified for at least 10 minutes; except by the VOR for CTG. After the first officer told ATC about the problem; ATC did not respond about the situation. I did send an ACARS message to Flight Control stating that ATC gave the crew a heading to fly. However; after I had sent the message and after the first officers break; the FO told me that ATC was actually unresponsive. The FO was the one calling ATC; so perhaps he remembered the situation better. Ultimately; the crew obtained a signal from CTG VOR and chose to fly a heading which would take them to the VOR. The GPS Spoofing was over by CTG; which was on our route; and everything returned to normal. Every checklist was performed from the QRH. The crew did an excellent job and the remainder of the flight was uneventful. I obtained the above details from conversations with the crew members who were at the controls during this event.

Second reporter narrative

On flight AB; we encountered GPS spoofing and jamming over spot MDY. We received the following eicas messages; unable Rnp ; data link lost; TERR POS; and ATC fault. We ran the appropriate checklist for all messages. Upon crossing MDY; the aircraft made an uncommanded left turn; followed by the magenta course fading to the right of our pfd. The fmc derived course was not able to find our position and make a clear line; at which point we selected heading select and maintained the magenta line and backed up our course with a vor course to CTG. After 10 minutes; the GPS began to working. Per the checklist; I told ATC and received no response. Thank you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I search flights by aircraft type on FlightFinder?

Pick an aircraft model — Boeing 737, Airbus A320, A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and more — enter your origin airport, and FlightFinder shows every route that plane flies from there with live fares.

Which aircraft types can I filter by?

We support Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787, the full Airbus A220/A319/A320/A321/A330/A340/A350/A380 family, Embraer E170/E175/E190/E195, Bombardier CRJ and Dash 8, and the ATR 42/72 turboprops.

Is FlightFinder free to use?

Search and schedules are free. Pro ($4.99/month, $39/year, or $99 one-time lifetime) unlocks the enriched flight card — on-time stats, CO₂ per passenger, amenities, live gate & weather — plus My Trips with push alerts.

Where does the route data come from?

Live schedules come from Amadeus, AeroDataBox and Travelpayouts. Observed routes (which aircraft actually flew a given city pair) are crowdsourced from adsb.lol ADS-B data under the Open Database License.
