Synopsis

NON ADHERENCE TO IAP/VOR APCH RESULTS IN ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION AND WRONG ARPT RWY APCH.

Narrative

FEMALE PLT NAMED 'CINDY' CAME TO OUR FBO FOR 'OVER THE COUNTER' FLT INSTRUCTION IN THE SMA. I WAS ASKED IF I HAD TIME TO DO A LCL TRAINING FLT. I AGREED. CINDY WAS WEARING A CPR PLT'S UNIFORM. AFTER SOME CONVERSATION; I CAME TO LEARN THAT SHE HAD HER ATP AND WAS TYPE-RATED IN A CPR JET AND THE ACR WDB AND ACR LGT. SHE INFORMED ME AS WELL THAT SHE HAD 8000 HRS FLT TIME. THIS INFO PUT ME AT EASE. FOR A TRAINING FLT; I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE ME WHO WOULD BENEFIT THE MOST. I FILED AN IFR ROUND ROBIN FROM MLB TO DAB TO ORL BACK TO MLB. WX WAS RPTED AS MARGINAL VFR TO IFR CONDITIONS ALONG MOST OF THE RTE. UPON REACHING DAB AIRSPACE; CONDITIONS WERE SOLID IMC. DAB APCH PROVIDED RADAR VECTORS TO WHAT WE WERE FINALLY INFORMED AS VECTORS FOR THE VOR RWY 16 APCH. A HASTY SETUP FOR THE APCH ENSUED. AS A RESULT OF MY COMPLACENCY AND LACK OF CONCENTRATION ON THE APCH; I MISINTERPRETED THE FINAL APCH FIX AS BEING 7.4 DME PRIOR TO OMN VOR RATHER THAN 7.4 BEING THE MISSED APCH POINT FOR THE APCH; AND; OF COURSE; OMN WAS THE FINAL APCH FIX. I WAS FATIGUED FROM A LONG DAY OF FLT INSTRUCTION WITH OTHER STUDENTS AND JUST WASN'T PAYING STRICT ATTN TO THE NORMAL STEPS I FOLLOW IN SETTING UP FOR THIS APCH. ANYWAY; WE PROCEEDED TO DSND TO THE ESTABLISHED MDA OF 700 FT AT 7.4 DME PRIOR TO OMN VOR. WE FINALLY REALIZED OUR MISTAKE AFTER IDENTING RWY 17 AT OMN (THE WRONG ARPT). WE CLBED BACK TO 1600 FT AND ATTEMPTED TO REINTERCEPT THE 156 DEG RADIAL FROM OMN WHILE ALSO NOTIFYING ATC OF A MISSED APCH. ATC SEEMED BAFFLED AND FINALLY INFORMED US THAT WE HAD JUST DSNDED ON ORMOND'S FIELD. WE RECEIVED RADAR VECTORS FOR ORL TO CONTINUE ON OUR IFR XCOUNTRY; AND ATTEMPTED TO CLEAN UP OUR ACT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT.
