PA-28 Flight Instructor reported their student on a solo flight experienced a runway excursion after overcorrecting from being off center line during landing.
Student was on his first landing of the day for Solo TOLs (Take-offs and Landings). From the info I have gathered from the student; the takeoff was smooth and normal; no abnormalities noted. The student made is turn to crosswind and then to downwind. The student configured abeam the thousand foot markers. On final; student noted his airspeed at approximately 74 knots. Student said the landing was normal with no bounce but that he was slightly left of centerline. The student then tried to correct with right rudder but says he applied too much rudder causing the tail to slide out causing a spin into the grass on the right side of runway XX. I inherited this particular student towards the end of the solo prep phase. This student has been a very good student overall; always on time; uses the sim consistently to practice; etc. During TOLs practice; the students biggest issue has been properly flaring and holding enough back pressure to allow the plane to touchdown at the minimum controllable airspeed. I have worked with the student on landings and have helped him develop the correct flare technique as well as proper rudder and aileron inputs to correct for crosswind. The solo warmup today went well; the student made the proper calls; ran through all checklists with no issues noted. We completed two full stop landings with no issues. The student landed on centerline and kept the aircraft aligned with the runway longitudinally throughout the flare and rollout. We completed one go around also with no issues. I reminded the student after completing the warmup that if any of the landings were unstable or unsafe to go around.
