Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported severe/moderate weather during approach for landing. After an airborne conflict; a missed approach; and a revised route the flight landed safely.

Narrative

On approach to ZZZZ we encountered thunderstorms and convective weather. We were vectored by approach to runway XX by ZZZZ approach. Cleared to ZZZZZ when able and report established on the LOC. We looked for a clearing and I was flying with heading select. Cleared to 8000 and for the approach. As we turned right we saw clearings and commenced the approach. I was configured with flaps 5. Experiencing moderate turbulence; heavy rain and plus or minus 10 kts. As I configured for the approach we were in FL CHG and descending. Captured 8000 and armed the APP. Put the gear down and flaps 20. Slowing get flaps 25 the aircraft leveled off and suddenly we were climbing and airspeed increased. I saw plus 20 knots and the aircraft was not slowing as I was using speed brakes to slow and descend. The FO called watch your speed and I had the speed set at 160 and we rolled it back to target of 149. The aircraft started to descend and then the speed immediately increased to 200 knots and never received any cautions or warnings. We broke out maybe 7 miles from the field. I tried S turning to lose altitude but at this point I knew we were going to do a missed approach and leveled off at 1000 to 1500 ft above the field and started to climb. I called for missed approach I pushed the GA switch and since we were 2000 ft above the airport I called for flaps 5; LNAV and speed 210 kts as per the published missed approach procedures for ILS Z RWY XX. Complying with missed approach we called ZZZZ approach and requested vectors to the North of the area we came through for another approach to RWY XX. Experienced heavy rain and plus or minus 10 kts but landed on RWY XX. Finally; there was a lot of talking on the tower frequency and evidently a small aircraft was cleared for takeoff and we received a TCAS TA. Suggestions: We don't have very good coverage of the weather in this area. Holding until the weather moved away from the field.

Second reporter narrative

On arrival into ZZZZ we were on the ZZZZZ Arrival linked up with the ILS Z XX; note thunderstorms were surrounding all vicinity of airport. At 14;000 Feet about 30 miles out from ZZZZZ1 we decided to deviate left of course for thunderstorms. Myself PM saw a clear path abeam ZZZZZ2 as ATC wanted us to turn Inbound if able; and Captain PF agreed as it was a 90 degree turn to ZZZZZ1 IAF and we flew that way as previously we were off the arrival and deviating due to weather. At this point we had bugged speed 210 and flaps 5 set and were around 10;000 feet to cross ZZZZZ1. After turning inbound our radar did pick a cell due to how heavy it was and we flew into it experiencing moderate turbulence and wind affecting by +/- 15 Knots and we were trying to reduce speed and descend the best we could putting out flaps when we intercepted the course inbound as to the left of us was even worse. Around 7;000 feet the PF called for flap 20 then gear down speed 170. As we were nearing the FAF PF called for Speed 150 flaps 25 that is when we experience wind shear of around 25 knots and an updraft ascending us 1500 feet putting us around 2;000 feet above GS; I was commanded to set speed target 143 which did nothing to drop speed; that is when I noted the flap over speed and said unstable. The speed brakes were extended to mitigate the over speed but accomplished nothing and we noted an EICAS message. After the FAF around 5000 feet we broke out too high and never capture GS. We both agreed at that point we were unstable and decided to descend at around 800 FPM out of the clouds and execute a missed approach as an aircraft Cessna Caravan was also taking off which caused only a TA. Missed approach was executed per SOP we came back around for the ILS Z XX again and experienced moderate turbulence and drafts but landed within parameter's.We need to be briefed more in depth on forecasted weather prior to departure and should have held until the weather cleared up or divert to ZZZZ1.
