2025-04 · NASA ASRS report 2237002
Part 107 UAS pilot reported the UAS ascended to 1300 feet during an automatic RTH due to an incorrect RTH setting.
At about XA:45 on Day 0; I was in the middle of testing out DroneDeploy with a DJI Air 2S in the nearby parking lot of my workplace. I have never used the program before and wanted to do a small test flight so I can understand how to use it before teaching my advanced drone students how it worked. It was about 70% done with the mapping when I suddenly had a low battery warning (30%). Only 6 minutes had passed since I began the operation and the battery that was used initially had a 60% charge. Once the low battery warning started; the drone shot up from 200ft AGL to about 1300ft AGL. During the ascent; I pressed the 'return to home' function on the application on my phone; but it kept climbing to 1300ft. Once it reached that altitude; it went over my location and began to descend back to the ground.I do not know why it decided to climb that high; whether it be a software glitch or interference; but I could have taken steps to research DroneDeploy's software before trying it out blindly on my own. Also; I should've used a fully charged battery.
The reporter learned several days after the event the DJI Fly app had a default RTH height of 1300ft. The reporter didn't believe the battery had anything to do with the incident.
