Synopsis

ACR HAS ENG FAILURE AT CRUISE.

Narrative

FLT WAS PROCEEDING ON SCHEDULE WBOUND; NEAR THE HAGURD INTXN (J211 AND J60). WHILE SETTING CRUISE PWR; THE #1 ENG EPR BEGAN TO DECAY. ENG HEAT WAS APPLIED; BUT OTHER ENG INDICATIONS ALSO BEGAN TO DECAY. AS THE AIRSPD BEGAN DROPPING OFF; I REQUESTED AND RECEIVED A LOWER ALT. IT BECAME APPARENT THAT ENG WAS FAILING. BECAUSE THE REASON FOR THE ENG FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED; THE HIGH TFC CONGESTION OF OUR DEST ARPT DTW; AND MY FAMILIARITY AND PROX TO THE CLE ARPT; I DECIDED TO LAND AT CLE AS PAX; CREW; ACFT AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY WERE BETTER SERVED. I NOTIFIED ATC THAT WE WERE LOSING AN ENG; REQUEST VECTORS TO CLE AND DECLARED AN EMER WITH EMER EQUIP STANDING BY. THE SO CONTACTED FLT DISPATCH AND INFORMED THEM OF OUR EMER. I TOLD THEM OUR PLAN. I BRIEFED THE FO TO FLY THE ACFT AND THE SO TO STANDBY WITH THE EMER CHKLISTS (ENG FAILURE CHKLIST). THE LEAD FLT ATTENDANT HAD ENTERED THE COCKPIT. I TOLD HIM OF OUR PROBLEM AND TO STANDBY WHILE WE WORKED OUT THE PROBLEM. AS THE ENG FAILED; WE COMPLETED THE ENG FAILURE CHKLISTS. I THEN COMPLETED THE FLT ATTENDANT BRIEFING AND INFORMED THE PAX OF THE FAILURE AND OUR PLAN TO LAND AT CLE. NORMAL CHKLISTS WERE USED AS WELL AS 2 ENG LNDG PROCS. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY FROM A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 5 AT CLE.
