Synopsis

A STUDENT PLT IN AN SMA RAN OFF THE RWY AFTER HITTING A PATCH OF ICE ON A TOUCH AND GO.

Narrative

I HAD FLOWN FROM MID-CONTINENT ARPT IN WICHITA; KS; TO HUTCHINSON MUNICIPAL ARPT IN HUTCHINSON; KS; TO PRACTICE LNDGS. THE HUTCHINSON TWR ADVISED ME OF CONDITIONS AND CLRED ME TO PERFORM A TOUCH-AND-GO ON RWY 31. THE RWY HAD PATCHES OF WATER AND THIN ICE WHICH WERE LEFT FROM A WINTER STORM THAT HAD BEEN IN THE AREA. THE TIME WAS PM20 AND THE TEMP WAS 32 DEGS. I HAD COMPLETED ONE TOUCH-AND- GO AND THEN REPEATED THE EXERCISE. AFTER MY SECOND LNDG I PREPARED THE AIRPLANE FOR TKOF AND ACCELERATED. AS THE AIRPLANE WAS GAINING SPD FOR TKOF; IT HIT A PATCH OF WATER OR ICE AND HYDROPLANED OR SLID OFF THE RWY TO THE L. THE AIRPLANE LEFT THE RWY AT AN ICE COVERED TAXIWAY INTXN AND CONTINUED INTO A SNOW COVERED GRASS AREA BTWN RWY 31 AND ANOTHER TAXIWAY. I TAXIED THE AIRPLANE TO THAT TAXIWAY AND THEN TO THE TERMINAL TO EXAMINE THE LNDG GEAR. AT THE TIME I LEFT THE RWY THE FARING ON THE R MAIN GEAR STRUCK A RWY LIGHT. THE L GEAR'S FARING STRUCK TWO REFLECTORS. I OBSERVED THE L FARING HAD NOT BEEN BENT BUT THE R FARING HAD BEEN. I TAXIED THE AIRPLANE TO FBO TO HAVE THE R FARING REMOVED TO DETERMINE IF THE STRUT HAD BEEN DAMAGED. IT HAD NOT BEEN DAMAGED AND WAS STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THE AIRPLANE WAS FLOWN BACK TO WICHITA LATER THAT EVENING.
