Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported they descended in response to a TCAS/RA for traffic landing on the parallel runway and received a low altitude alert from ATC.

Narrative

Descending on the approach to XXL in ZZZ we had pairing traffic. First Officer was hand flying with auto thrust off. Originally assigned 210; we were catching up to them. We were given 180 and switched to Tower. We flew the approach offset to the left because we felt an RA was likely. Somewhere below 2000 AGL we received a descending RA for the aircraft traffic above landing XXR. We clicked off the Flight Directors and followed the descending RA; which gave us a 1500 FPM descent. Maintained visual contact with aircraft and notified ATC of the descending RA. We chose to comply with the mandatory RA; but discussed a plan to either go around (immediate left turn away) or continue approach (clear of conflict; traffic in sight and stable by 500). The aircraft never initiated a climb. Tower never told them to go around. We received a low altitude alert from Tower around 800 and communicated with them that we leveled off and would be able to stabilize and continue the approach unless they needed us go around. They indicated we had their blessing to continue the approach. We reengaged the FDs (Flight Directors); armed the approach and slowed while leveling to catching the glide; keeping traffic insight; and were stable and configured well before 500. Flight continued to landing normally.

Second reporter narrative

While on visual approach to XXL we received a descending RA from an E175 on the LOC for XXR. We followed the RA down to 900' RA; advised Tower of the RA immediately but didn't receive direction. At 900' the RA commanded a level off. With the level off we were able to slow to final approach speed and have a stabilized approach by 700 RA. An uneventful landing occurred.
