Air carrier technicians were performing a passenger entry door operational test of the B777 emergency power assist battery. The squib fired and escape slide deployed.

Narrative

When I worked on the 2R door's epas battery replacement; I was a designated observer. While our team member was down to the Emergency Power Assist System Battery Operational Test; because the door safety switch was on the arm position and the interior door handle was to the open position. The squib fired and the slide blown. Suggested: proper manpower and have enough time to perform.

Second reporter narrative

Accidental activation of (EPAS) Emergency Power Assist System bottle during EPAS battery operation check. Door 2R EPAS battery disarm switch in wrong position for operation check. Long wait time for man power to accomplish task. Suggested: Ensure proper manpower is available for task before starting or assigning task.
