2025-08 · NASA ASRS report 2279650
Air carrier flight crew reported a ground conflict during taxi with another aircraft taxiing at a high rate of speed crossing from their right. The Captain abruptly stopped to avoid a collision; causing one flight attendant to fall.
Aircraft X was parked at [Gate] XX. The aircraft pushed back and was cleared to taxi. Shortly after contacting ground we were cleared to turn left on Alpha taxiway then Alpha 13; Victor; Victor 6; November for runway 22L. I looked left and said clear left and the FO looked right and said clear right. After adding power and moving a few feet onto the taxiway the FO directed me to stop because of Aircraft Y on Alpha taxiway taxiing at a high rate of speed. ATC did not instruct us to wait for that aircraft or inform us it was coming. I applied brakes to stop the aircraft to ensure we would not contact that aircraft; which was a sudden stop. As soon as I stopped and we were clear of the aircraft I called back to the flight attendants to check on them and see if they were up. I was informed the number X flight attendant fell down and possibly hurt her foot. I asked if she needed or wanted to go back to the gate. Another flight attendant also said that we have reserves and not to worry if she had to get off the flight. I said again it wasn't a big deal and we can go back. She said it wasn't that bad. I was informed everyone else was okay. I checked on them again after climbing thru 18;000' the number X said it was a little sore; but that's it. After landing; I talked to the number 3 and she said she iced it a little and that it was a little sore. All flight attendants continued on their scheduled flight back to Chicago with two different pilots as originally scheduled.Cause: ATC ground control could have either informed us of that aircraft taking on Alpha or told us to follow them.
After contacting ground control for our initial taxi clearance from the ramp area in ORD; I cleared the area to the right of the aircraft and the CA advanced power to start the initial roll out of the ramp area. I again looked to the right of the aircraft to ensure we were still clear and saw Aircraft Y taxiing at a high rate of speed around the curve of taxiway A. ATC had made no mention of this aircraft in our initial taxi instructions. I told the Captain to stop and he looked to the right in my direction and immediately spotted the high speed taxiing aircraft. He quickly applied the brakes to stop our slow movement and the aircraft came to a surprisingly quick stop. After the crossing traffic passed us the CA immediately called the flight attendants to ensure everyone was ok because of our quick stop. The number 3 FA informed him that she had fallen and possibly hurt her foot during the stop but felt ok continuing the flight and would monitor her foot for worsening symptoms. We continued our taxi and the flight completed without further incident as the CA called a few times during the flight to check on the FA's wellbeing. The CA and I left the FA crew in ZZZ for our overnight and they continued back to ORD with another crew. Cause: ATC failed to mention or missed Aircraft Y's high rate of taxi speed.
