Synopsis

B767-300F pilots reported a priority descent due to a cargo door EICAS message at cruise altitude. FOD was found in the door seal.

Narrative

In cruise at FL380; I was the pilot flying. At about 50 miles from Top of Descent (TOD); I got up to use the lavatory before starting down. Upon return; I noticed a master caution light illuminated on the glare shield and an EICAS message indicating Main Cargo Door". Immediately strapped in and noticed my Captain already coordinating with ATC and already working the initial part of the QRH for Main Cargo Door EICAS. Priority handling was requested and ATC cleared us to descend and maintain 8000. Control of the aircraft was handed over to me and I initiated a slightly early descent to 8000 feet using FLCH (Flight Level Change). Captain (Pilot Monitoring) continued to run the checklist which called for depressurization of the cabin by setting 9500 in cabin alt selector window on overhead panel. During descent through FL190; the MAIN CARGO DOOR EICAS and discreet overhead annunciation extinguished passing through about FL190. Fight continued as normal into ZZZ with no further issues.Cause: Possible Foreign Object Debris wedged between floor and base of main cargo door that may have interrupted the normal function of the Main Cargo Door sensor(s).Suggestions: Ensure ground crews make sure any debris in or around the Main Cargo Door is cleaned up prior to Main Cargo Door closure."

Second reporter narrative

Received a Main Cargo Door EICAS message.Advised ATC and ran QRH. Once the aircraft was depressurized per the QRH; the EICAS message extinguished; no loud noises or indications of an open door were noted. The flight landed at the intended airport; without incident within 20 minutes.Cause: Possible FOD contamination in the Main Cargo Door seal area. Noted after landing; FOD from shipments in the seal area of the door.Suggestions: Unsure if the door needs adjustment or if contamination caused the anomaly. If contamination was the root cause then proper cleaning would have been adequate to prevent this from occurring.
