Air Carrier flight crew reported Tower issued go around at 300 feet AGL due to traffic on the runway; and expected them to continue straight out rather than fly the published missed approach.
Narrative
Was instructed by ATC at approximately 300ft AGL to go around due to traffic still on the runway. Executed a normal go around and was not given any alternate instructions. During turn to right for published missed; ATC strongly said we should have remained runway heading. PM said we were not given a heading and asked what new heading to turn to. We turned on heading and completed the missed approach and subsequent vectoring to a full stop successfully.
Second reporter narrative
We were on approach on XX we were told to go around by tower at 300 ft. We were not given any alternate missed approach instructions; so we flew the published while I waited for a break in radio traffic to get alternate instructions. As we were in the turn; tower told us not to turn to the north as there was traffic departing XYL. We stopped our turn and only after querying them did we finally get missed approach instructions. I told him we never got alternate missed approach instructions. The go around was uneventful and we came back in for a landing on XZR.
