Synopsis
Air Carrier Flight Crew reported while at the gate maintenance personnel advised them of a glow from the engine resulting in the flight crew inspecting and extinguishing a tailpipe fire.
Narrative
After the completion of the shutdown checklist; approximately 5-10 minutes later a local ramp/maintenance worker came into the cockpit and said there was a light glow from the #2 engine. He said it was in the back of the engine. At this point it was unclear if it was a fire or just a hot glow from the turbine section. I had the FO call ZZZ ground to see if they could see anything and to also to call ARF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting). I went to tell the #1 FA to do an expedited deplaning of the passengers through the front door. ZZZ ground couldn't verify. I told the FO to go to the ramp to verify. During this time an airport safety vehicle drove behind the aircraft and stated on ground frequency that there was no fire. I received this information and replied. The FO came back to the cockpit and reported there is a small fire/ember in the tailpipe area. We immediately commenced the engine tailpipe checklist; and the glow extinguished. At no point was there smoke or odor detected in the cabin. Cause: I can't think of any actions or conditions that could have prevented this event. The training that my FO and I have been given greatly aided in the end outcome. We both used the threat and error methodology by executing the fix strategy; and called for the QRC.
Second reporter narrative
After completing shutdown checklist and packing up to leave a mx (Maintenance) person told capt and I that the number 2 eng had a fire in aft section. There was no indications in cockpit of this so we were initially unclear as the extent and nature of the situation so Capt asked me to contact ground. I called ground if he could see any fire on our 2 eng. Capt informed flight attendants to quickly disembark passengers which by this time had already commenced to nearly half. I went down stairs to ascertain the situation with a fire bottle in hand at Capt suggestion in case I could use it to fight a fire. I examined the engine and could see a internal small fire in the aft section of the tail pipe I quickly asked mx personal to clear area and give us hand signals to us in cockpit so we could motor the engine to blow fire out. Capt and I soon after ran the tailpipe fire QRH procedure and was successfull in blow fire out. ARF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) was present soon after to confirm no fire remained.Cause: Not sure of any it went smoothly and timely given the phase of debarkation of both passengers and cargo bags.
