2025-10 · NASA ASRS report 2296702
Air taxi flight crew reported being directed away from terrain by ATC during initial climb while following the departure procedure as cleared.
On Day 0 at about XA:47 local time; myself PIC and SIC (Second in Command) was given a clearance from clearance delivery in ZZZZ. The clearance stated ' Cleared to ZZZ direct to ZZZZZ; ZZZZZ1 transition ZZZZZ2 expect FL370 squawkXXXX departure frequency XXX.X. The clearance was read back as is and ATC responded with the word 'correct'. We took off on runway XX and made a right turn climbing through 5400 MSL towards the ZZZ VOR to track the 035 radial to ZZZZZ3. While in the turn we went over to the departure frequency; ATC told us we need to turn south immediately due to terrain; while in the turn to a south heading she told us we need to maintain the 360 heading and climb immediately. We had a visual of the Terrain and no warnings were issued. The ATC lady asked us what clearance were we given and who gave it to us. I told her what we got and she came back and said we were given the ZZZZZ4 departure. I told her that was not mentioned in the clearance and what we read back to clearance on the ground was confirmed by the clearance controller. The airplane was maneuvered safely and the flight continued with no problems.
On Day 0 at about XA:47 local time; myself SIC (Second in Command) AND PIC were given a clearance from clearance delivery in ZZZZ. The clearance stated ' Cleared to ZZZ direct to ZZZZZ; ZZZZZ1 transition ZZZZZ2 expect FL370 squawkXXXX departure frequency XXX.X. I wrote it down; and read it back as that; and ATC responded with the word 'correct'. We took off on runway XX and made a right turn climbing through 5400 MSL towards the ZZZ VOR to track the 035 radial to ZZZZZ3. While in the turn we switched over to the departure frequency; ATC told us we need to turn south immediately due to terrain; while in the turn to a south heading she told us we need to maintain the 360 heading and climb immediately- so we turned again (and our track shows these 2 turns). We had a visual of the Terrain and no TAWS warnings were issued. The ATC (Departure). Controller asked us what clearance were we given and that Clearance gave it to us. PIC responded to her with our previous clearance - she came back and said we were given the ZZZZZ4 departure. I told her that was not mentioned in the clearance and what we read back to clearance on the ground was confirmed by the clearance controller. She switched us to the next frequency and the rest of the flight was uneventful.
