Synopsis

B777 flight crew reported a 'Gear Door Position Disagree' EICAS message when selecting gear up after takeoff. Crew diverted and made a normal landing.

Narrative

When the gear was retracted; got EICAS nose gear GEAR DOOR POSITION DISAGREE. The noise in the cockpit made it obvious that something wasn't right (gear door open and possibly nose gear down). The checklist is written for the approach environment and does not make a lot of sense for after takeoff. We leveled off at 6000' reviewed the checklist; and communicated with dispatch & maintenance over the SAT (Satellite) phone. The gear was extended and the alternate gear extension performed. We requested priority handling and decided to return to ZZZZ. We needed to dump approximately 25;000 pounds of fuel to get below max landing weight. ZZZZ Control vectored us northwest bound to dump. We contacted the company again and decided to divert to ZZZZ1 instead of dumping fuel. We went into holding over ZZZ [VOR] and set up for an arrival to runway XXR in ZZZZ1. We exited holding and headed towards ZZZZ1. ZZZZ1 did not give us a clearance to land until below 500' because of landing traffic exiting the runway and traffic in position and holding for takeoff. Then on short final at 100' we hit a bird on the radome and it bounced off of the captain's windscreen. No damage to the aircraft. Other than the late landing clearance with anticipation for a go-around and the birdstrike; the landing was uneventful.Cause: Maintenance issue.

Second reporter narrative

I was flying; during the takeoff into the initial climb the PM selected gear up when commanded. Received the Gear Disagree and hatched" Nose Gear Door EICAS messages. PM consulted the checklist non-normal. Captain/ PM called company on Sat (Satellite) Phone. MX (Maintenance) advised to dump fuel and return to ZZZZ and complete the non-normal checklist. We were advised by ATC to head north for fuel dump. During this time crew discussed options and requested holding. PM called company to update position and discuss a possible divert to ZZZZ1 for a better MX response. We then discussed and company advised they would like us to go to ZZZZ1. Running fuel burn numbers while in hold; realized that dumping fuel would be unnecessary. Coordinated the divert with ZZZZ [CONTROL] and ATC then departed the hold and took vectors to ZZZZ1. Checklist was completed and we landed in ZZZZ1. On landing in ZZZZ1 we impacted a bird on the captains side of the ray dome at 100 AGL.Cause: Nose gear did not lock up when commanded"
