2025-10 · NASA ASRS report 2299043
Part 107 UAS pilot reported conducting a UAS flight in controlled airspace without LAANC authorization.
On the morning of Day 0; between approximately XA:30 and XB:35 AM; I operated my registered DJI Air 3S drone near Location X. During this flight; I inadvertently entered Class D airspace without obtaining prior FAA authorization.Upon opening the AutoPylot app; I misinterpreted the warning zone as permissible to fly and did not realize it required LAANC approval until after the flight concluded. This was my first experience operating in or near a warning zone as a new Part 107 pilot. When I double-checked the area in the DJI Fly app; I mistakenly believed the area was cleared for flight.I maintained two visual observers and ensured that the drone did not fly over people; vehicles; structures; or facilities. Weather and wind conditions were verified prior to takeoff; and the flight was conducted safely without incident or damage. The purpose of the operation was to capture aerial video of the neighborhood for reporting purposes. To prevent recurrence; I will implement a more thorough preflight review of airspace classifications and always verify LAANC requirements before operating in any controlled or warning zone airspace.
