Synopsis

A319 Captain reported they had to suddenly stop taxiing to avoid another taxiing aircraft.

Narrative

After landing at ZZZ our flight ; due to occupied XX Gate; was instructed; by ramp control; to hold short of [Taxiway] 2 on 1. We complied with ramp wishes. Our aircraft was positioned approximately behind Gate XX. The ramp was heavily congested between Gates XX and Taxiway 3. A 737 was positioned at Spot 1; Taxiway 4; with its nose pointed towards Taxiway 1. Our instructions; per Ramp Control: taxi on 1; take first left onto the 'inner line'; which is 2; taxi past company and make a 180 turn to hold behind the 737 at Spot 1. After repeating the instructions to the FO; to ensure we both understood; we began taxiing. We cleared left and right and approaching 2 began a left turn. The FO shouted stop; and suddenly a CRJ darted across our path from the right. The CRJ was on Taxiway 5; which is ZZZ Ground Control's territory; and we were on 1; controlled by Ramp. I mashed the brakes and stopped within 80 ft of the CRJ. We immediately queried Ramp; and his reply; 'That aircraft (CRJ) didn't call me. He might be talking to Ground but he should've called Ramp'.We proceeded to follow ramp's instructions and parked behind company. No further issues occurred.

Second reporter narrative

After landing at ZZZ on XXL and headed to park at XX we were instructed to enter the ramp at 2 on 1 and hold short of 3. Our gate was occupied so ramp want to move us around to a position where we could wait. We were then instructed to make a left turn on the inner line on 4 and make a right 180 for the outer line onto 5. As we moved forward and began our left turn I then picked up an air carrier aircraft turning left on 3 for 1. I asked the Captain to Stop who could not see the aircraft because he was looking in the direction of our turn. After hitting the brakes we asked Ramp about our taxi clearance. We were told that the aircraft in question was talking to Ground and not Ramp but was operation in Ramp space.
