Piper-32 pilot reported that while departing an uncontrolled airport; not flying the ATC assigned ODP resulted in flight below the MEA. ATC issued an immediate climb to the pilot and they continued to their destination.

Narrative

REVISED to correct date of incident.I departed ZZZ on an IFR flight plan to ZZZ1. My clearance included the ZZZ ODP (Obstacle Departure Procedure). Due toprevailing winds; I departed RWY XX instead of RWY XY in VMC making a right turn direct ZZZVOR. I contacted ZZZ Departure after taking off and was told I was below the MEA and toclimb immediately. I was told that the controller was questioning if Ifollowed the ODP. Upon review; I saw that the ODP does not apply to RWY XX at ZZZ; only RWYXY. I was operating under Part 91 that normally doesn't require flying an ODP EXCEPT if itis part of an ATC clearance; which it was. Therefore; the Controller expected me to departRWY XY not RWY XX causing confusion. If I want to deviate from the given ODP for any reason;I need to ask ATC for an Amended Clearance so everyone is on the same page. In the future; Iwill carefully read the ODP at the departure airport and confirm with ATC any changes I wantbefore departure so it is included in my final clearance.
