Air carrier flight crew reported uncontrolled speed fluctuations and an altitude excursion due to severe turbulence during descent.
Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew reported uncontrolled speed fluctuations and an altitude excursion due to severe turbulence during descent.
Narrative
During descent into ZZZ on ZZZZZ arrival encountered Severe Turbulence over point ZZZZZ at 16;000; Auto Pilot disengaged and we called upset; PF took control of aircraft as we encountered airspeed fluctuations between 270-310kts and went 1;000ft above Glide Path on arrival. Encounter lasted about 2 mins and then we re-engaged the auto pilot and had an uneventful approach and landing. No injuries were reported. Dispatch; Chief Pilot; and maintenance were informed and inspections completed. Flight continued on.
Second reporter narrative
During descent we encountered severe turbulence at 16;000 feet over intersection ZZZZZ while descending into ZZZ. Airspeed fluctuated between 270-310 knots and we deviated 1000 feet high of path. The encounter lasted around 2 minutes. The autopilot kicked off and as a precaution we did our upset recovery calls. No passengers or crew were hurt and the flight landed safely. Dispatch; Chief Pilot; and maintenance were called. The aircraft was inspected and the next flight departed on time.
