Synopsis

A helicopter pilot reported they deviated from Tower takeoff instructions resulting in a NMAC with an arriving aircraft on short final approach.

Narrative

At ZZZ in a helicopter; requested an eastbound departure from the ramp on the southeast side of the field. Fixed wing traffic landing Runway XX. Tower stated; 'departure at own risk from ramp; eastbound approved at or below 500 feet; I acknowledged and read back the takeoff instructions. As I climbed through 200 feet; I retracted the landing gear; got a GEAR UNSAFE light and at the same time got a #1 Generator Fail Caution light. I became distracted and drifted northeast towards the Runway XX final approach. Tower told me to turn south; and I immediately turned towards a south heading. I estimate I passed approximately 200 feet horizontally and 200 feet vertically from an airplane on final. Tower admonished me and I acknowledged my error and departed the area enroute to my home airport. This loss of separation was caused by myself alone; as I became distracted by the 2 systems problems and lost my situational awareness. Neither problem was critical; but I allowed myself to become fixated on them and failed to fly my aircraft.
