Synopsis

TAIL DRAGGER SMA TAXIES INTO ANOTHER SMA AFTER LNDG.

Narrative

TAXIED APPROX 1/2 MI N TOWARD THE RAMP AREA. DURING THIS TAXI PERIOD THERE WERE NO OTHER ACFT OBSERVED ON THE TXWY (CLOSED RWY 1). JUST PRIOR TO XING THE OTHER ACTIVE RWY (11/29) (POINT C); ACFT WAS SLOWED AND I OBSERVED BOTH R AND L TO SEE IF ANY ACFT WERE LNDG OR DEPARTING ON RWYS 11 OR 29. SEEING NO OTHER ACFT I THEN TAXIED ACROSS 11/29 AND HEADED SLIGHTLY TO THE L OR TOWARD THE W SIDE OF THE TXWY AS THE MOST DIRECT RTE TO THE TIE-DOWN/FBO RAMP. AGAIN I DID NOT NOTICE ANY OTHER ACFT ON THE TXWY. AT POINT D I FIRST SAW AN SMA RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME ON THE TXWY HDG DIRECTLY TOWARD ME. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION (TO KILL THE ENG) IN ANTICIPATION OF STRIKING THE OTHER ACFT. THE 2 ACFT COLLIDED. AFTER THE COLLISION THE PLT OF THE ACFT INDICATED THAT SHE HAD STOPPED THE ACFT WHEN IT APPEARED THAT WE WERE GOING TO CRASH AND APPARENTLY DID NOT TRY TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. NEITHER DID SHE ATTEMPT TO CALL OVER THE RADIO. SHE WAS APPARENTLY NOT AWARE OF THE FIELD OF VISION PROBS INHERENT IN TAILWHEEL TYPE ACFT AND THOUGHT SINCE SHE COULD SEE ME THEN I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE HER. AFTER HAVING CROSSED RWY 11/29 AND TURNING SLIGHTLY L; THE CTR OF THE TXWY WAS NOT VISIBLE TO ME AS I WAS SITTING ON THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT AND THE HIGH NOSE BLOCKED THE VIEW TO THE R FRONT. I DID NOT OBSERVE THE SMA ENTER THE TXWY AND MOVE TOWARD ME. ALL TAILWHEEL TYPE ACFT PLTS SHOULD BE REMINDED THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO PERFORM S-TURNS WHILE TAXIING TO ENSURE THAT THE AREA IN FRONT IS CLR.
