Synopsis

PAX AND CABIN ATTENDANTS INJURIES FROM CLR AIR TURB.

Narrative

I WAS ON A REST BREAK. ACFT WENT THROUGH DRY TOPS OF DISSIPATED CLOUDS OR HIGH CIRRUS. ACFT CLBED 300 FT; LEVELED OFF AND RETURNED TO 35000 FT ON AUTOPLT. I WAS IN FIRST CLASS SEAT. I ROSE UP APPROX 2 OR 3 INCHES AND SETTLED BACK INTO SEAT. I ROSE; LOOKED AROUND; OTHER PAX LOOKED AROUND AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP; NOT TOO ALARMED. WHEN I WENT BACK INTO COCKPIT; THE FO ADVISED ME OF WHAT WENT ON; AS DESCRIBED AS ABOVE; INCLUDING THAT THE AIRSPD WENT TOWARD THE BARBER POLE AND HE HAD TO DISCONNECT THE AUTO THROTTLE. HOWEVER; THE AUTOPLT WAS NOT DISCONNECTED. HE STATED THAT HE HAD NO RADAR RETURNS; MOONLESS NIGHT; WAS IN AND OUT CLOUDS IN SECONDS. I WAS TOLD LATER THAT A PAX IN THE BACK HAD CUT A FINGER WHEN ARM REST WAS BROKEN IN THE EVENT. LATER I WAS ADVISED (PURSER ADVISED) THAT 3 FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRUISED AND MILDLY INJURED. SHE ALSO ASKED ME TO ADVISE THE COMPANY THAT SHE WOULD LIKE AN INFLT SUPVR TO MEET THE ACFT ON ARR INTO JFK. SHE ALSO SAID THAT AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE; THE INJURED FLT ATTENDANTS WOULD BE EXAMINED BY THE COMPANY DOCTOR AT JFK; AND I CONCURRED. THE INFLT SUPVR MET THE ACFT. THE PAX WITH THE CUT FINGER REFUSED ANY ASSISTANCE; AND EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL. I DROVE TO MY HOME; TOOK 2 1/2 HRS -- SLEPT 2 1/2 HRS; AND RECEIVED A CALL FROM CHIEF PLT TO DRIVE BACK TO LGA FOR DRUG TEST; REQUIRED BY NTSB; BECAUSE 1 OF THE FLT ATTENDANTS HAD A BROKEN TAIL BONE. AFTER DRUG TEST; I DROVE HOME; TOOK 3 HRS. HAD THE PURSER OR THE INJURED FLT ATTENDANT ADVISED ME OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE INJURY OR NOT LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT NOTHING MAJOR HAD OCCURRED; I COULD HAVE AT LEAST HAD THE MEDICS OR A DOCTOR MEET THE ACFT OR I COULD HAVE LANDED AT SJU. IN THE REST SEAT I WAS IN; THE EVENT FELT LIKE A GOOD BUMP BUT; IN MY ESTIMATION; WAS NOT SEVERE. I THINK THE FLT ATTENDANT IN THE REAR OR PURSER SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME IN STRONG TERMS; IF ANYTHING THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE INJURIES; HAD OCCURRED. I WAS LED TO BELIEVE JUST THE OPPOSITE.
