Synopsis

COMMUTER ACFT LANDS WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative

WE WERE NEARING THE END OF OUR MORNING FLT. I HAD WITH ME A FO ON HIS FIRST TRIP. IT WAS THE FO'S LEG AND WE WERE APCHING A VERY BUSY ARPT FOR LNDG. THINGS WERE VERY SLOW AND I WAS HELPING HIM WITH PWR SETTINGS AND ACFT CONFIGN. AS WE WERE APCHING A TURN TO FINAL; ATC DECIDED TO PUT A PLANE IN FRONT OF US AND TOOK US THROUGH FINAL. AT THAT TIME THE FREQ TFC REALLY PICKED UP. I WAS HELPING THE FO WITH THE APCH WHEN ATC CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH. SINCE WE HAD PASSED THROUGH FINAL WE WERE A LITTLE LOWER AND SLOWER THAN I WAS COMFORTABLE WITH. I WAS ASSISTING THE FO IN CORRECTING THIS AS WE CAME ON SHORT FINAL. AFTER WE TOUCHED DOWN I REALIZED WE HAD NOT RECEIVED A HDOF FROM APCH NOR A CLRNC TO LAND FROM THE TWR. WE IMMEDIATELY CLRED THE RWY AS WE CONTACTED THE TWR. THERE WERE SEVERAL FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THIS OCCURRENCE. I WAS FLYING WITH A PLT ON HIS FIRST LINE FLT AND WAS WATCHING HIM MORE CLOSELY THAN I NORMALLY WOULD HAVE TO. THE TURN THROUGH FINAL ADDED TO MY DISTR AS I HAD TO ASSIST THE FO WITH THE ACFT. THE INCREASED ACTIVITY ON THE RADIO DISTRACTED BOTH THE ATC CTLR AND MYSELF. LOOKING BACK ON THIS EVENT I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN FULL CTL OF THE PLANE WHEN I SAW THE FO WAS GETTING BEHIND. I FEEL THAT IF I HAD THE CTLS AT THAT TIME I WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS DISTRACTED AND WE WOULD HAVE NOTICED THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED TO LAND.
