Synopsis

MLG HAS ENG VIBRATION AND STRANGE SMELL AT ROTATION.

Narrative

SCHEDULED ACR SVC FROM PIT-AVP. WE WEIGHED APPROX 110 K; 28.5K UNDER GROSS AND THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMP WAS 92 DEGS F. WE HAD AN ACFT SWAP AT PIT PRIOR TO THIS FLT AND NO MEL'S WERE NOTED. I DID A VERY COMPLETE PREFLT AND NOTED NO IRREGULARITIES TO THE ACFT. ALL PARTS OF THE OP WERE NORMAL UP TO THE ROTATION. THERE WAS AN ACFT ON A 3 MI FINAL FOR RWY 28R AT PIT WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. UPON ROTATION WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A PRESSURIZATION LEAK. WE BOTH CHKED OUR COCKPIT WINDOWS TO INSURE THAT THEY WERE SECURE. I CHKED THE DOOR LIGHTS TO MAKE SURE THE DOORS WERE ALL CLOSED. I COMPLETED A NORMAL TKOF AND TURN TO THE N AS REQUESTED BY THE TWR. ON ATC I HEARD THE ACFT THAT LANDED BEHIND US TELL THE TWR THERE WAS RUBBER ON THE RWY. WHEN I SELECTED CLB PWR THE VIBRATION ON THE #1 ENG WENT FROM .5 TO 4.5. I FLEW THE AIRPLANE AND THE CAPT CONTACTED OUR MAINT CTL IN PIT AND HE CONTACTED THE FLT ATTENDANTS TO GET THEIR INPUT. WITH THE EVIDENCE OF THE ENG VIBRATION/UNUSUAL CABIN NOISE/UNUSUAL SMELL FROM THE PACKS AND THE RPT BY THE FLT BEHIND US; WE ELECTED TO RETURN TO PIT. I PULLED THE #1 ENG TO IDLE AND MADE A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG ON RWY 32 AT PIT. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AS A PRECAUTION. WHILE TAXIING TO THE GATE A FIRE TRUCK RPTED THAT OUR #2 MAIN WHEEL TIRE APPEARED DAMAGED. INDEED THE #2 TIRE HAD BEEN DESTROYED DURING THE TKOF ROLL AND RUBBER WAS INGESTED INTO THE #1 ENG DOING EXTREME DAMAGE TO THE FAN AND FAN SECTION OF THE ENG.
