Synopsis

LGT HAS VIBRATION SHIMMY ON TKOF. LOUD BANG HEARD BY CABIN ATTENDANT; MASKS DROP.

Narrative

ON TKOF ABOVE 100 KTS; NOTICED VIBRATION AND SHIMMY OFF ACFT. SUSPECTED ROUGH RWY DUE TO RECENT PAVING AT EWR RWY 4L. AFTER ROTATION (V1; VR) ACFT SEEMED FINE. AS PRECAUTION WE ADVISED TWR TO CHK RWY FOR POSSIBLE TIRE DAMAGE; WHICH THEY DID. ACFT BEHIND US FOR TKOF NOTED LOUD BANK. PAX AND FLT ATTENDANTS NOTED LOUD BANG AND MASKS DROPPED. WE DEPARTED THE ARPT AREA AND ASKED TO HOLD AT SOLBERG VOR TO CONFER WITH OUR MAINT DEPT. INITIALLY; THEY ADVISED US TO CONTINUE TO OUR DEST; ATL; BUT AFTER CREW DISCUSSION; CAPT EXERCISED HIS EMER AUTHORITY; AND WE BURNED DOWN FUEL AND RETURNED TO EWR. LNDG AND APCH WERE UNEVENTFUL. WE ROLLED OUT ON RWY 4R AND HAD THE GEAR INSPECTED AND PINNED. DAMAGE TO ACFT WAS INBOARD MAIN TIRE SHREDDED BY FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE. R INBOARD TRAILING EDGE FLAPS DENTED AND #3 ENG C1 COMPRESSOR 6 DAMAGED BLADES. TWR ADVISED THAT AN ACFT PART (LATER DETERMINED TO BE FROM AN MLG) WAS FOUND ON THE RWY. WE SUSPECT THIS CAUSED THE DAMAGE. ALWAYS GO FOR THE SAFEST COURSE OF ACTION. IN HINDSIGHT; WE PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE GEAR DOWN AFTER ROTATION; BUT ALL COCKPIT INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL SO WE ASSUMED A NORMAL SCENARIO ON BUMPY RWY.
