Synopsis

SMA ON ILS APCH HAS ENG QUIT. LANDS ON GOLF COURSE.

Narrative

IFR TRAINING FLT MAKING AN INST APCH TO BREMERTON ARPT WHEN ENG BECAME ROUGH. TRIED TO RESTART BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. CARB HEAT HAD BEEN APPLIED AT THE FINAL APCH FIX AND LEFT ON; SO THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE PROB. PROP STOPPED AND BY THAT TIME WE WERE UNABLE TO GET TO THE RWY SO MADE A TURN AND LANDED ON THE FAIRWAY AT GOLD MOUNTAIN GOLF COURSE. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE OR OCCUPANTS OF THE ACFT. FAA CAME OUT TO THE SITE APPROX 22 HRS LATER AND DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE FUEL REMAINING IN THE TANKS. ACFT OWNER SAID FUEL HAD BEEN LEAKING FROM THE FUEL VALVE ON 1 OF THE WINGS BUT HE HAD DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS 12 GALLONS IN THE TANKS WHEN WE DEPARTED. WE WERE 30 MINS INTO THE FLT WHEN THE ENG FAILED. FUEL COULD HAVE SIPHONED OUT OF THE WINGS SITTING ON THE GOLF COURSE ALL NIGHT OR IT COULD HAVE BEEN DRAINED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 264299: PREFLT FUEL CHK USING GAUGED ROD INDICATED APPROX 14 GALLONS. NOTICED DRIP FROM QUICK DRAIN VALVE WHICH STOPPED ON TESTING FOR WATER. VALVE SEEMED DRY AFTER TEST. AN ANNUAL WILL BE PERFORMED; AND THE QUICK DRAIN VALVE REPLACED. A MORE ACCURATE FUEL MEASURING ROD WILL BE USED IN FUTURE.
