Synopsis

AN ACR MLG LANDED WITH ITS NOSE GEAR UP.

Narrative

FLT WAS ON FINAL APCH TO 18R AT CLT. AT APPROX 1700 FT AGL; THE PF CALLED `LNDG GEAR; DOWN; LNDG CHKS.' AT BTWN 1000-1200 AGL; THE NOSE WHEEL WAS CONSIDERED NOT DOWN. AN IMMEDIATE GAR WAS INITIATED. ATC WAS ADVISED OF THE GAR AND TO PLEASE STAND BY. UPON REACHING A SAFE ALT; THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE APPROPRIATE ABNORMAL CHKLIST. AFTER COMPLETING THE ABNORMAL CHKLIST; AN EMER WAS DECLARED IN PREPARATION OF A NOSE GEAR UP LNDG. COMPANY PROCS AND CHKLISTS WERE ACCOMPLISHED PRIOR TO INITIATING ANOTHER APCH. ON SHORT FINAL; ATC CONFIRMED THE ABSENCE OF NOSE WHEEL EXTENSION. EVAC WOULD BE IMMINENT. TOUCHDOWN AND ROLLOUT WERE NORMAL UNTIL THE NOSE MADE CONTACT WITH THE PAVEMENT. MAX BRAKE EFFORT WAS USED TO SHORTEN STOP DISTANCE. DENSE SMOKE FILLED THE COCKPIT. BY OPENING THE R COCKPIT WINDOW; I WAS ABLE TO EVAC A GREAT DEAL OF THE SMOKE. THE CAPT COMMANDED THE EVAC AT THE COMPLETE STOP. APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS WERE ACCOMPLISHED. I CHKED THE AREA OUTSIDE THE ACFT UNDERNEATH THE R COCKPIT WINDOW BEFORE EGRESSING OUT THE WINDOW TO ASSIST PAX EVAC OUT THE R FORWARD SVC DOOR. NO INJURIES WERE RPTED AMONG THE 89 PEOPLE ABOARD. SUCCESS OF THE DESCRIBED INCIDENT IS PRIMARILY DUE TO FOLLOWING PRESCRIBED COMPANY PUBLISHED PROC AND CHKLISTS. SECONDLY; EXCELLENT USE OF COCKPIT RESOURCE MGMNT ASSISTED IN A MAX TEAM EFFORT.
