ACFT EQUIP PROB MALFUNCTION CAUSES #2 ENG TO FLAME OUT. GND CTLR RPTS SMOKE FIRE.
NORMAL LNDG. AREA UPON EXITING RWY 28L IT APPEARED WE LOST #2 GENERATOR/PWR TO #2 ENG. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS OCCURRED GND CTL IN SFO CALLED TO SAY WE HAD BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM #2 ENG. WE THOUGHT THIS WAS RESULT OF #2 GENERATOR FAILURE. NEXT GND SAID THEY ACTUALLY SAW FLAMES. THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT ON THE TXWY AND SHUT FULL LEVER OFF TO #2 ENG. I PUT THE FLAPS TO 40 TO PREPARE FOR EVAC. JUST THEN FLT ATTENDANT CALLED FROM BACK CONFIRMING SMOKE -- SIMULTANEOUSLY TURNED. SAID FLAMES OUT; NO FIRE. SO WE DECIDED NOT TO EVAC. WE REQUESTED FIRE EQUIP -- TOLD THE FLT ATTENDANT; THE PROB WITH GENERATOR AND ASKED THEM TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE #2 ENG AND NOT TO EVAC; GOING TO THE GATE. REQUESTED FIRE EQUIP TO FOLLOW US TO GATE. BEFORE TAXIING AGAIN CHKED OVERHEAT/FIRE TEST TO MAKE SURE IT WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. CHKED OK; BUT NEVER RECEIVED ANY OVERHEAT OR FIRE WARNINGS FROM #2 ENG. WE PARKED AT GATE; AND THE CAPT MADE ANNOUNCEMENT TO PAX AND REQUESTED NORMAL DEPLANING. PAX DEPLANED IN QUIET NORMAL MANEUVER -- NO HYSTERIA OR QUESTIONS FROM PUBLIC. APPROX 116 SOULS ON BOARD. EXPLAINED SIT TO MAINT; FIRE DEPT AND MAINT TOOK OVER. WE LEFT THE ACFT.
