Synopsis

GEAR UP LNDG AT NON TWR ARPT. STRANGE MIX OF 1 ENG INOP SHORT FIELD APCH LNDG; AS TRAINEE SAW IT. LACK OF CREW BRIEFINGS.

Narrative

ON MAY/XX/94 APPROX PM30 LCL TIME INSTRUCTOR PLT AND I LEFT LANTANA (LNA) ARPT TO PRACTICE MANEUVERS AND PROCS. SO THAT I COULD RECEIVE MY MEI LICENSE. WE HAD BEEN PRACTICING SHORT AND SOFT FIELD LNDG PLUS TKOFS AND SINGLE ENG LNDGS. ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 9 WE SIMULATED L ENG OUT MIXTURE PROPS THROTTLES FORWARD AND CHKED FLAPS; GEAR; PUMPS ON MAGNETOS AND TANKS. ESTABLISHED BLUE LINE AND PROCEEDED TO SET UP FOR SHORT FIELD LNDG AND FORGETTING ABOUT THE GEAR. ONCE REALIZING OUR MISTAKE; I PULLED MIXTURES TO CUT OFF AND THROTTLES TO IDLE AS I PULLED BACK ON YOKE TO SLOW AND STOP THE ACFT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. ONCE ACFT STOPPED WE BOTH CHKED TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS OFF FUEL AND ELECTRICAL WE THEN GOT OUT OF THE ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 270482: WE DEPARTED BY 9 AND BEGAN AROUND THE TFC PATTERN. WE PERFORMED THE INITIAL GUMP CHK; NOTING 3 GREEN. I THEN PROCEEDED WITH A FAILURE (ZERO THRUST) OF THE L ENG. I THINK STUDENT THEN; IN CLRING UP THE ACFT; MAY HAVE SUBCONSCIOUSLY PUT THE GEAR UP TO CLEAN UP THE ACFT WHICH IS PROC. ON FINAL WE CHALLENGED AND RESPONDED ON THE FINAL GUMP CHK. I THOUGHT I SAW 3 GREEN DOWN; STILL DID NOT HEAR A GEAR HORN. BUT; THIS IS THE GREY AREA. WE THEN BEGAN TO SCRAPE ON THE RWY.
