B747-400 HAS ENG OVERTEMP JUST AFTER TKOF FROM DTW WHICH CAUSED HIM TO DUMP FUEL; DIVERT; LAND AT MSP.
B747-400 (2 PLT COCKPIT) AUGMENTED CREW (13 HR FLT) OF 2 CAPT AND 2 FO'S ALL ON FLT DECK FOR TKOF. FO WAS MAKING THE TKOF. SHORTLY AFTER LIFTOFF; WE HEARD SEVERAL LOUD RPTS THAT SHOOK THE ACFT. AT FIRST; I THOUGHT IT WAS A NOSE TIRE COMING APART -- THEN #3 ENG WAS OBSERVED OVERTEMPING. THE OTHER CAPT (IN L SEAT) REDUCED THRUST TO IDLE ON #3; BRINGING TEMP BACK DOWN TO NORMAL RANGE -- THEN ADVANCED IT TO MID-RANGE. ALL ENG PARAMETERS RETURNED TO NORMAL AND REMAINED THAT WAY THE REST OF FLT. SINCE #3 SEEMED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY NOW; AND WE WERE HVY (175000 LBS ABOVE MAX LNDG WT); WE AGREED TO PROCEED TO MSP WHILE DUMPING RATHER THAN RETURN TO DTW. WX WAS NO FACTOR; GOOD EVERYWHERE. WE ALL (CREW AND COMPANY MAINT AND DISPATCH) AGREED CONTINUING TO NRT WAS NOT ADVISABLE. MSP HAD A SPARE ENG AND MAINT PERSONNEL TO INSPECT THE ENG AND MAKE REQUIRED REPAIRS. APPROX 150000 LBS OF FUEL WAS DUMPED ENRTE FROM DTW TO MSP AT FL240 WHILE ALL 4 ENGS OPERATED NORMALLY. AS AN EXTRA PRECAUTION AGAINST ANOTHER EVENT HAPPENING ON APCH; #3 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN ON DSCNT INTO MSP AND EMER EQUIP WAS REQUESTED TO STAND BY FOR OUR LNDG. NO EMER WAS FORMALLY DECLARED. AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE ON 3 ENGS. THE ENG WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CHANGED (THAT NIGHT) DUE TO TEMP LIMITS BEING EXCEEDED ON THE DTW TKOF.
