Synopsis

UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE.

Narrative

I AM RELATIVELY UNFAMILIAR WITH THE DENVER AREA; HAVING FLOWN INTO THAT AREA ONLY ONE OTHER TIME. I FLEW INTO CENTENNIAL (APA) IFR; AND DECIDED TO LEAVE VFR; AND SO PURCHASED A CLASS B CHART FROM FBO AT CENTENNIAL. THE CHART IS EFFECTIVE MAR 9; AND OBSOLETE AUG 18; 1994. THERE ARE NO STATEMENTS ON THE CHART MODIFYING THE VALIDITY OF IT; AND FBO MADE NO STATEMENT ON ITS VALIDITY. I GOT A FULL BRIEFING IN PERSON AT THE CENTENNIAL FSS (DENVER); AND NO NOTAM GIVEN TO ME INDICATED THE CHART WAS NOT VALID. WE TOOK OFF VFR FROM CENTENNIAL; I CLBED TO 7500 FT AND FLEW NW; STAYING WELL OUTSIDE THE 10 NM RING FROM MI HIGH; AS SHOWN ON THE CURRENT CHART. I DID NOT HAVE A CURRENT DENVER SECTIONAL; BUT DID HAVE THE WAC CHART COVERING THE AREA; ALTHOUGH I WAS NOT USING IT. I CALLED DENVER APCH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE; BUT CONTACT TOOK A FEW MINUTES. WHEN THE CTLR HANDED ME OFF TO THE NEXT SECTOR; HE SAID 'NEXT TIME; BE SURE TO CALL EARLIER.' AT THAT POINT; I REMEMBERED THAT THE ARPT SWITCH AND CORRESPONDING AIRSPACE SWITCH HAD NOT OCCURRED; NOTICED THAT MY CLASS B CHART WAS BASED ON THE NEW ARPT; AND ASSUMED I HAD ENTERED THE CLASS B SPACE BEFORE I WAS CLRED TO. WHEN I GOT HOME THAT DAY; I VERIFIED THIS ON AN OLD (1992) SECTIONAL I HAD; ASSUMING THE CLASS B SPACE HAD NOT SHRUNK. LOOKING BACK; I WAS AWARE THAT THERE WAS AN ARPT AND AIRSPACE SWITCH ABOUT TO OCCUR (FROM NOTICES I HAD RECEIVED); BUT OTHER THEN THAT; I HAD NO INDICATION AT FBO; FSS; OR ATC THAT THE 'CURRENT' CHART WAS NOT EFFECTIVE UNTIL THE CTLS INDICATED I HAD VIOLATED CLASS B SPACE. MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT A NOTAM BE ISSUED INDICATING THESE CHARTS ARE INCORRECT.
