Synopsis

UNAUTH WRONG RWY LNDG.

Narrative

AT THE CONCLUSION OF A 5 HR FLT THAT ORIGINATED IN DAYTONA BEACH; FL; WITH A FUEL STOP AT GRAND STRAND; SC; I WAS CLRED FROM 15000 FT TO A LOWER ALT FOR LNDG AT MY HOME ARPT; ABE. THE ENTIRE FLT FROM DAYTONA BEACH HAD PLENTY OF WX. I HAVE ON-BOARD RADAR; SO I WAS ABLE TO PENETRATE MOST OF THE TIME WITH LITTLE TURB; AND ONLY MODERATE SHOWERS. ABE'S WX WAS 4000 FT OVCST WITH 7 MI OF HAZE. NEAR THE END OF MY FLT (LAST 60 MI) MY COURSE WAS CHANGED 4 TIMES BY APCH. IN THE SECOND TO LAST INSTRUCTION; I WAS CLRED TO 4000 FT; EXPECT BACK COURSE RWY 24 APCH AT ABE. I SET UP MY RADIOS FOR THE APCH; THEN WAS INSTRUCTED TO DSND TO 2200 FT AND EXPECT A VISUAL TO RWY 24. 30 SECONDS LATER; I WAS TOLD THAT THE ARPT WAS AT 10 O'CLOCK AND 5 MI. AT THIS POINT; I WAS STILL HIGH AND FAST AT 3000 FT. THE WX WAS NOT AS CLR AS I EXPECTED. IN FACT; I BARELY BROKE OUT OF THE CUMULUS AT ABOUT 3300 FT. AFTER MY INSTRUCTIONS; I GLANCED TO THE L AND SAW THE ARPT. I LOOKED AT MY DIRECTIONAL GYRO AND NOTED 240 DEGS WAS AT MY L. I THEN TURNED TO THE ARPT AND SET UP TO LAND. (I WAS GRUMBLING TO MYSELF THAT I'M SICK OF THESE LAST MIN 'DIVE BOMB' APCHS. WHEN MY TURBO CHARGES BLOW; I'M THE GUY THAT NEEDS TO PAY FOR THEM!) ANYWAY; ON FINAL; THE RWY WAS CLR. IT WAS VERY HAZE; WITH A GLARE; AND I DIDN'T NOTICE I WAS ON RWY 31 UNTIL THE LAST MIN. SINCE THE RWY WAS CLR; I DECIDED TO LAND INSTEAD OF GOING AROUND. THE FACTORS WHICH AFFECTED MY PERFORMANCE MIGHT BE 2 PLUS HRS AT OXYGEN LEVEL (I WAS USING OXYGEN; OF COURSE); AND THE DISTR OF THINKING ABOUT THE PREVIOUS DIVE BOMB APCH.
