FALSE LOGBOOK WRITE UP CAUSED BY A FALSE WARNING.

Narrative

ON DSCNT INTO FRANKFURT; ABOUT 25000 FT; THE CDU PAGE CAME UP AND STATED 'CONFIRM ENG OUT...CANCEL.' A CHK OF ALL ENG PARAMETERS INDICATED ALL ENGS WERE RUNNING AND THE CDU PAGE WAS IN ERROR. AFTER LNDG; THE CAPT BRIEFED THE MAINT MAN THAT MET THE ACFT ABOUT THE 'CONFIRM ENG OUT' MESSAGE BUT THAT ALL ENGS WERE RUNNING. HE ASKED THE MAINT MAN IF THE 'ADAS' OR THE 'CFDS' INDICATED THAT THERE HAD BEEN ANY PROB WITH ANY ENG AT ANY TIME. THE MAINT MAN COULD NOT FIND ANY PROB WITH ANY ENG AT ANY TIME. SINCE THIS APPEARED TO BE A CDU PROB AND NOT AN ENG PROB; THE CAPT DID NOT MAKE A WRITE-UP IN THAT LOGBOOK THAT AN ENG HAD FAILED. AFTER WE (THE PLTS) HAD LEFT; THE MAINT MAN; UNDER DURESS; MADE A WRITE UP IN THE LOGBOOK THAT THE INCOMING CREW HAD MADE A VERBAL RPT TO HIM THAT THEY HAD AN ENG FAILURE ON FINAL APCH. (THIS WAS UNKNOWN TO ME AT THE TIME.) I RECEIVED A TELEPHONE CALL FROM THE LAX CHIEF PLT IN WHICH HE ACCUSED MY CAPT OF FAILING TO MAKE A WRITE UP IN THE LOGBOOK THAT WE HAD AN 'ENG FAILURE ON FINAL.' I TOLD THE CHIEF PLT THAT WHEN I LEFT THE COCKPIT THE CAPT AND THE MAINT MAN WERE DISCUSSING WHAT; IF ANYTHING; TO WRITE IN THE LOGBOOK. FURTHER; I TOLD THE CHIEF PLT THAT THE RPT OF OUR LOSS OF AN ENG ON FINAL WAS INCORRECT. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY CAPT THAT THE CHIEF PLT MADE A RPT TO THE FAA THAT THE CREW FAILED TO MAKE A LOGBOOK WRITE UP OF AN ENG FAILURE ON FINAL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE FO'S MCDU DISPLAYED 'CONFIRM ENG OUT;' THERE WAS NO ENG FAILURE; SO THE CREW ERASED THE MESSAGE. THE OUTGOING CAPT WAS IN THE COCKPIT WHEN THE RPTING CAPT WAS DESCRIBING THIS SIT TO THE MAINT MAN. THE 2 CAPTS HAVE HAD BAD BLOOD BTWN THEM FOR SEVERAL YRS. THE OUTGOING CAPT FORCED THE MAINT MAN TO WRITE UP THE ENG FLAME OUT; THERE WERE PHONE CALLS TO THE CHIEF PLTS BOTH IN ATL AND LAX. THE OUTGOING CAPT TOOK THE ACFT WITH A SMALL DELAY FOR THE PHONE CALLS; APPARENTLY NO MAINT WAS PERFORMED ON THE ACFT. A HEARING WAS LATER HELD IN ATC ABSOLVING BOTH RPTRS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 280855: AFTER CAPT AND CREW LEFT ACFT WITH NO WRITE UPS IN ACFT LOGBOOK AND NO REASON FOR ANY WRITE UPS; SOMEONE ENTERED THE FOLLOWING: 'AS PER INCOMING CREWS COMMENT -- #2 ENG FLAMED OUT.' THIS IS A FALSE RPT.
