SMT ENCOUNTERS WIND SHEAR ON APCH. HAD LNDG RESULTS WITH ACFT DAMAGE.
ON SHORT FINAL AT LONE PINE ARPT; I EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF 20 KTS IN MY KING AIR 90. FULL PWR WAS APPLIED BUT THE ACFT STRUCK THE RWYS CTRLINE APPROX 200 FT PAST THRESHOLD. AIRSPD LOSS OF 20 KTS TOOK PLACE IN ABOUT 1 SECOND. SOME DAMAGE TO R LNDG GEAR EVEN THOUGH BOTH WHEELS HIT AT SAME TIME; ACCORDING TO SKID MARKS. NO OTHER DAMAGE TO ACFT EXCEPT R GEAR; NO PERSON OR OTHER PROPERTY AFFECTED. NO PAX ON BOARD. I FEEL CAUSE OF DAMAGE WAS A WIND SHEAR AND POSSIBLE METAL FATIGUE (CONSIDERING THE PART THAT BROKE -- DIE CAST METAL) WAS AN ORIGINAL PART AND 27 YRS OLD. THE ARPT MGR HAD MENTIONED THAT THE WIND WAS GUSTING AND HIS ARPT WAS NOTORIOUS FOR ACFT EXPERIENCING WIND SHEARS ON SHORT FINAL. HE MENTIONED THAT I WAS THE FIFTH ACFT THIS YR THAT HAS EXPERIENCED WIND SHEARS RESULTING IN SOME TYPE OF GEAR DAMAGE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: ARPT MGR CONSULTED TO VERIFY THE WIND SHEAR PHENOMENON COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO HIM. HE INDICATES YES; THERE IS A WIND SHEAR WHENEVER THE WINDS ARE FROM THE SE AND AT 20 KTS OR ABOVE. HE FEELS IT IS DUE TO THE TREES AT EITHER END OF THE APCH WHICH COMPRESS THE AIR MOVEMENT THEN RELEASE AFTER PASSAGE. AND YES; THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER INCIDENTS OF LNDG GEAR DAMAGE.
