Synopsis

LOSS OF ACFT WING ROOT FAIRING.

Narrative

FOUND A 2 INCH X 2 INCH HOLE IN L WING ROOT FAIRING AT GSO CONTRACT MAINT REPAIRED HOLE WITH TAPE AND SIGNED ACFT LOG. PREFLT OF ACFT REVEALED NO OTHER DISCREPANCIES. ON CLBOUT OF GSO (APPROX 3000 FT MSL) FLT ATTENDANT CALLED COCKPIT TO ALERT US TO AN UNUSUAL NOISE IN CABIN. AFTER ACFT WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE CLB WE CALLED HER BACK BUT SHE SAID NOISE WAS GONE. UNEVENTFUL CRUISING FLT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A SHORT DURATION OF MODERATE TURB. APPROX 5 NM SW OF CSN VOR WITH AUTOPLT COUPLED I NOTICED A LOW RUMBLING ACCOMPANIED WITH A SEVERE VIBRATION AND GETTING WORSE. THE AUTOPLT WAS NOT ABLE TO HOLD STRAIGHT AND LEVEL SO I DISENGAGED IT; REDUCED AIRSPD TO 150 KTS AND RETRIMMED. THE CAPT; AS A PNF; WAS TRYING TO ESTABLISH COM WITH DULLES APCH; AS WE BRIEFLY LOST COMS AND NAVS. SHALLOW TURNS (10 DEG BANK) WERE USED AS STEEPER TURNS GREATLY INCREASED THE VIBRATION. A NO FLAP LNDG WAS MADE BECAUSE WE DID NOT WANT TO 'EXPERIMENT' WITH OTHER CONFIGNS. AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE WITH NO FURTHER DIFFICULTIES. WE DID NOT TAKE THE FLT ATTENDANT'S COMMENTS ON THE NOISE LIGHTLY; AND AFTER LEARNING THAT THE NOISE WENT AWAY; BELIEVE IT WAS APPROPRIATE TO CONTINUE TO THE DEST. AFTER LNDG WE LEARNED THAT THE CONTRACT MECH DID NOT USE 'HIGH SPD TAPE' BUT USED SILVER DUCT TAPE. WE HAD NO IDEA THAT HIGH SPD TAPE WAS TO BE USED FOR THIS TYPE OF REPAIR AND I HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE BTWN THE 2 TYPES OF TAPE.
