Synopsis

MLG ON VISUAL APCH LANDS WRONG RWY.

Narrative

WE WERE ON A REVENUE FLT INTO LIT; AR; IN A B-737 APCHING THE ARPT FROM THE NE. WE WERE HEADED DIRECTLY TOWARD THE VOR WHICH IS S OF THE FIELD. THE ATIS GAVE THE LNDG RWYS AS RWY 4L/R AND RWY 36. DURING THE DSCNT AND APCH BRIEFING I COMMENTED HOW I WOULD LIKE TO LAND ON RWY 22R AS WE WERE LINED UP AND IT HAD A VASI ON THE L SIDE. AS WE APCHED THE VOR APCH CTL CLRED US FOR A VISUAL RWY 4L WHICH MEANT A R TURN TO FINAL AND INSTRUCTED US TO 'KEEP IT TIGHT.' I ANGLED IN TO A CLOSE 180 DEG POS ABEAM THE INTENDED POINT OF LNDG; SLOWING; CONFIGURING AND DSNDING AT APPROX 180-160 KTS. I TIMED 20 SECONDS TO GIVE MYSELF SOME STRAIGHT AWAY AND STARTED MY R TURN. BECAUSE I WAS TIGHT I EXPECTED AN OVERSHOOT OF THE RWY. AT THE 90 DEG POS I WAS LOW AND STOPPED THE DSCNT AND DROVE INTO THE RWY 4L GS AND RESUMED THE DSCNT. I PICKED UP THE WELL LIT RWY 36 FROM AN OVERSHOOT PORTION AND CORRECTED MY LINEUP FOR THAT RWY. WE HAD SWITCHED TO TWR AND BEEN CLRED TO LAND RWY 4L AT ABOUT THE 135 DEG POS. WE TOUCHED DOWN; WERE IN REVERSE AND BRAKING WHEN MY COPLT SAID WE WERE ON RWY 36 AND NOT RWY 4L. WHAT I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT IS WHY I DIDN'T SEE THE LIGHTS FOR RWY 4L WHEN I LOOKED OUT AND SAW THE LIGHTS FOR RWY 36 ANGLING L. I SHOULD HAVE SEEN RWY 4L LIGHTS ANGLING R; AS THE ENDS OF THESE 2 RWYS TOUCH EACH OTHER.
