Synopsis

FLT TRAINING FLT RETURNED INTO KNOWN ICING CONDITIONS BY RETURNING OVER THE SAME RTE AFTER PICKING UP ICE ON THE ACFT DURING APCH TO LANDING.

Narrative

THE FLT TOOK PLACE FROM IND AND THE DEST WAS 3SM. I RECEIVED A WX BRIEFING 30 MIN PRIOR TO TKOF. THE TEMP AT IND WAS 31 DEGS F BUT THE BRIEFER STATED THERE WAS A TEMP INVERSION AND NO NOTICES FOR ICING. THE TOPS WERE RPTED AT 2500 - 3000 FT. I DECIDED TO ATTEMPT THE FLIGHT KNOWING THAT THE CEILINGS WERE 900 FT WITH GOOD VISIBILITY AND THE TOPS WERE AT 2500 - 3000 FT. ON THE CLB THERE WAS NO ICE BUILD-UP. WE WERE ON TOP AT 3000 FT. WE WERE GIVEN THE APCH (VOR-A) AND TOLD TO DSND TO 2500 FT. THIS PUT US IN THE CLOUDS. AS I DSNDED I NOTICED WE PICKED UP SOME RIME ICE. ONCE WE LANDED I REMOVED THE ICE AND DECIDED TO DISCONTINUE THE FLT AND RETURN TO IND. THE TEMP AT 3000 FT WAS 33 DEG F AND WE HAD WATER ON THE WINGS AND STRUT ABOVE 2500 FT. I MADE A POOR JUDGEMENT TO RETURN TO IND BUT FELT PRESSURED TO AT LEAST RETURN TO HOME BASE. I KNOW WE WOULD BE ABLE TO CLB ABOVE THE CLOUDS IT WAS CLR ABOUT 3000 FT AND THE TEMP WAS ABOVE FREEZING AT AROUND 2500 FT. THE BRIEFER HAD RPTED THE FREEZING LEVEL AT 8000 FT.
