CAPT; OF 3 PERSON FLC; DID NOT HEAR ENTIRE TAXI CLRNC; AND RELIED UPON BRIEFING FROM OTHER CREWMEMBERS. ACR FAILED TO COMPLY WITH 'HOLD SHORT' INSTRUCTIONS.
JFK XA30 TAXI CLRNC 'TAXI RWY 22R; L OUTER; ALPHA; X- RAY.' APCHING VICTOR BRAVO; MECHANICAL PROB NECESSITATED RETURN TO PARKING. AT XC40 MECH PROB FINALLY FIXED; ACFT CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22R; BUT THIS TIME VIA 'L INNER; ALPHA; XRAY' 'HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 31R.' I WAS MOMENTARILY DISTRACTED DURING THE 'HOLD SHORT' PORTION OF CLRNC AND ASKED 'WHAT WAS IT (THE CLRNC); SAME AS LAST TIME BUT ON THE INNER NOW?' OR WORDS TO THAT AFFECT. FO; AND SO AGREED; BELIEVING THAT I UNDERSTOOD THE HOLD SHORT PORTION OF CLRNC. APCHING RWY 31R; FO LOOKED DOWN TO REVIEW DEP PROC. I LOOKED TO MY L; DECLARED 'CLR L;' WHEN FO DIDN'T RESPOND; I CHKED R; DECLARED 'CLR R;' AND PROCEEDED ACROSS RWY 31R. WHEN ALMOST ACROSS RWY; FO LOOKED UP AND STATED 'I THINK WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT BACK THERE.' GND CTLR SUBSEQUENTLY NOTED OUR LOCATION AND STATED THAT HE HAD US ON RADAR; ANYWAY. WHILE THE LATE HR; AND MAINT DELAY; CERTAINLY PLAYED A PART IN THIS INCIDENT; THE MAIN CAUSE WAS MY MOMENTARY INATTN TO A CLRNC; AND IT'S READBACK. THIS MUST BE UNDERSTOOD BY THE ENTIRE CREW AT ALL TIMES. IF ONE CREWMEMBER DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE CLRNC; HE SHOULD NOT 'PUT WORDS INTO ANOTHER'S MOUTH;' IN TRYING TO UNDERSTAND IT. ADDITIONALLY; XING ANY RWY REQUIRED VIGILANCE ON THE PART OF THE ENTIRE CREW. EVEN THOUGH I COULD SEE THE APCH PATH TO RWY 31R QUITE WELL; HAD I ASKED THE FO TO 'CLR R' IT WOULD HAVE FORCED HIM TO GET OUT OF HIS DEP CHART; AND 'BACK INTO THE LOOP.' HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THE RWY WAS OUR HOLD SHORT POINT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 296825: DISCUSSED WITH CAPT THAT WE WERE TO HOLD SHORT OF A SPECIFIC RWY PRIOR TO REACHING THE DEP RWY. WATCHED TAXI ON AND OFF WHILE DOING OTHER DUTIES AND INSURING THE MAINT PROB WAS INDEED FIXED AND ALL SYS WORKING AS THEY SHOULD.
