Synopsis

RPTR SUSPECTS HE MAY HAVE CLBED ABOVE THE FLOOR OF THE CLASS B AIRSPACE.

Narrative

SKY CONDITIONS SCATTERED WITH TOPS APPROX 5000-6000 FT. AFTER DEPARTING VFR FROM MYF I HAD TO NAV AROUND SCATTERED CLOUDS WHILE MAINTAINING APPROPRIATE DISTANCE FROM THEM AND REMOVING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. ABEAM THE DEL MAR RACE TRACK AND FLYING AT ABOUT 5500 FT; I INITIATED A CLB TO DISTANCE MYSELF FROM NEARBY CLOUD FORMATIONS. I FORGOT THAT THE FLOOR FOR THE CLASS B AIRSPACE IN THIS AREA IS 6800 FT. AS I OVERFLEW CRQ AT ABOUT 8000 FT (STILL CLBING); I NOW REALIZE THAT MY FLT PATH MAY HAVE CLIPPED THE EDGE OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. I HAD INTENDED TO CONTACT SAN DEP DURING CLBOUT TO GET A CLRNC TO ENTER CLASS B. I DEFEND THIS ACTION WHILE CONCENTRATING ON MANEUVERING AROUND THE CLOUDS. IN RETROSPECT BY CONTACTING DEP IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH EASIER TO AVOID CLOUDS. ALTHOUGH I'M INST RATED I AM NOT CURRENT SO FILING IFR WAS NOT AN OPTION. ALSO; SINCE RECEIVING MY INST RATING I HAVE BECOME LESS PROFICIENT IN USING VFR CHARTS. ALTHOUGH I HAD A CURRENT SAN VFR TERMINAL AREA CHART AND WAS USING IT TO NAV; MY LACK OF RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE CLASS B ALLOWED ME TO FORGET DETAILS FOR THE AIRSPACE STRUCTURE THAT I HAD MEMORIZED BEFORE I STARTED MY INST TRAINING.
