AIRWAY HDG TRACK POS DEV RESULTED FROM PLT'S USE OF EQUIP THAT WAS OUT OF TOLERANCE. NAV ERROR.
I PICKED UP IFR OUT OF SGJ; INSTRUCTED TO FLY DIRECT TMB. THEN I WAS INSTRUCTED TO INTERCEPT V-3 TO MELBOURNE. THEN V-437 TO PAHOKEE; TURN DIRECT BRIKO INTXN. THENCE TMB. THIS MEANT FROM MY PRESENT POS; TURN L. APCH SAID TURN TO 120 DEGS; INTERCEPT V-3 TO MELBOURNE 10000 FT. I TURNED TO 120 DEGS NAVING BY LORAN/GPS AND OVERRAN V-3 BY 3-4 MI. APCH CALLED AND ASKED MY HDG. I REPLIED 155 DEGS. I HAD INTERCEPTED V-3. HOWEVER; MY LORAN/GPS INDICATED 3-4 DEGS OFF APCH HDG. I THEN TUNED IN MY VOR AND REGAINED V- 3 VIA VOR RADIAL 161 DEGS. THE REMEDY IS TO ALWAYS USE VOR WHEN CAPABLE RECEPTION IS RECEIVED AND XCHK LORAN BY VOR INDICATIONS. I SHOULD NOT RELY SOLELY ON LORAN GUIDANCE; ESPECIALLY WHEN ASSIGNED TO A VICTOR AIRWAY OR JET RTE. ANOTHER COURSE IS TO HAVE MY LORAN/GPS INSPECTED AND BROUGHT UP TO TOLERABLE LIMITS FOR NAV. NOTE: SINCE THIS INCIDENT MY LORAN HAS BEEN PLACARDED 'FOR VFR USE ONLY.' THE IFR CERTIFICATION WILL BE REASSIGNED AT A LATER DATE. I BELIEVE INCIDENTS SUCH AS THIS ARE LEARNING EXPERIENCES ON PLT'S PART; BUT THE PLT HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG -- ONLY FOLLOWED THE PARTIAL INFO HE HAD (THE LORAN ONLY; AND NO XCHK WITH THE VOR).
