PUB DEFICIENCY -- ACR MECH FOLLOWED THE MAINT CHKLIST THAT LATER PROVED TO BE FAULTY.

Narrative

ON JUN/THU/95 I TOOK OVER A JOB THAT WAS STARTED THE DAY BEFORE ON A BROKEN MD-80. IT WAS ORIGINALLY FERRIED INTO INDY FOR AN ENG TRIM RUN ON JUN/WED/95. PEOPLE WERE CALLED IN ON 1ST AND 2ND SHIFT TO WORK ON IT. ON MY SHIFT MYSELF AND ANOTHER MECH WAS TO REPLACE THE #2 ENG FUEL CTL AND FUEL PUMP DUE TO THE ENG BEING TEMP LIMITED AT TKOF PWR. AFTER REPLACING THE FUEL CTL AND PUMP WE PERFORMED THE TRIM RUN REQUIRED BECAUSE OF REPLACING THE COMPONENTS. ON THE ACR'S CHKLIST FOR THE TRIM RUN THERE WAS A PORTION THAT STATED 'NOT REQUIRED IF THE FUEL CTL WAS REPLACED' SO I INDICATED 'NOT APPLICABLE' ON THAT PORTION. EVERYTHING ELSE CHKED OK. THE ACFT LOGBOOK WAS COMPLETED AND THE ACFT FLEW REVENUE FOR ABOUT 1 WK. ON JUL/TUE/95 THE ACFT RETURNED TO IND AND OUR STATION MGR WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE ACFT WAS GOING TO BE GNDED BECAUSE SOME PAPERWORK HAD BEEN LOST. I WAS ON MY DAYS OFF FROM WORK; AND WAS CONTACTED AT HOME ABOUT THE PAPERWORK PROB. WE HAD WRITTEN DOWN THE FIGURES FOR THE STEP THAT WASN'T REQUIRED ON THE CHKLIST SO I WAS TOLD TO JUST MAKE OUT A NEW CHKLIST AND WRITE DOWN THE FIGURES FOR THE STEP THAT WE HAD INDICATED 'NOT APPLICABLE' ON. SO I COMPLIED WITH THAT AND ALSO I VOIDED OUT THE 'NOT APPLICABLE' ON THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK. I ASKED IF THERE WOULD BE A PROB OF REDOING THE PAPERWORK AND I WAS ASSURED THAT THIS WOULD CLR UP EVERYTHING. SOMEWHERE IN THE TURN OVER OR SHIPPING OF THE PAPERWORK TO PIT; SOMEWHERE; PAPERWORK GOT LOST. I AM FILLING OUT THIS AS A PRECAUTIONARY. I GUESS THE FAA HAS GOTTEN INVOLVED IN THE PAPERWORK BECAUSE THERE WAS PROBS WITH PAPERWORK BEFORE THE ACFT WAS FERRIED IN ON JUN/WED/95.
