Synopsis

INADVERTENT RWY INCURSION DUE TO VERY SMALL AREA BTWN RWYS AND NO HOLD SHORT LINES.

Narrative

BOTH PRIMARY RWYS 4/22 AND 12R/30L CLOSED AT HOU; LANDED ON RWY 35. TWR CLRED US TO LAND AND; AS WE BEGAN TURNING OFF RWY; SAID TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R; AS WE LOOKED TO SEE WHERE RWY 30R WAS WE BEGAN TO CROSS IT. IT DOESN'T LOOK AS IF THERE IS ENOUGH ROOM TO CLR RWY 35 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R. THERE IS TOO MUCH CONSTRUCTION GOING ON THESE DAYS AND THE PLACEMENT OF THE RWYS IN THIS CASE CAUSES CONFUSION. TWR CHIEF SAID THEY WERE HAVING A PROB WITH THIS INTXN. THERE ARE NO HOLD SHORT LINES FOR THIS RWY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATES THAT RWY 4/22 IS NOW OPEN AT HOU. HOU ATCT STATES THAT THIS IS CORRECT; AND THAT RWY 12R/30L IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN NOV/15/95. IT SEEMS THAT THIS PROB HAS FIXED ITSELF. THE RPTR STATES THAT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE ROOM BTWN THE RWYS. WHEN HE TURNED OFF OF RWY 35 AT THE END; HE WAS NOW ON BOTH RWYS 17/35 AND RWYS 12L/30R. THE RPTR IS A CHK AIRMAN ON THE B737-200. HOU ATCT SAID THAT THEY HAD LOTS OF TROUBLE WITH THIS INTXN WHILE THE CONSTRUCTION WAS IN PROGRESS. THE RPTR STATES THAT HOU ATCT WAS NOT AWARE THAT THERE ARE NO HOLD SHORT LINES ON TXWY 'E' BTWN RWYS 17 AND 12L.
