INSTRUCTOR PLT OF AN SMA SEL FAILED TO OBTAIN TAXI CLRNC DUE TO THINKING CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT WAS FOR HIM.
WE HAD JUST COMPLETED A WATERFOWL SURVEY ALONG THE TENNESSEE RIVER AND WERE PREPARING TO DEPART HSV FOR OUR HOME BASE MGM. I WAS SERVING AS PIC AND FLT INSTRUCTOR. THE OTHER OCCUPANT OF THE ACFT WAS A DEPT EXECUTIVE WHO IS A STUDENT PLT CURRENTLY PREPARING FOR HIS PVT PLT CHK RIDE. HE WAS TO FLY THE ACFT AND I WOULD OPERATE THE RADIOS. I RECEIVED THE ATIS INFO AND CALLED CLRNC DELIVERY FOR THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RADIOS IN OUR ACFT ARE CAPABLE OF 3 FREQS AND I REMEMBER HAVING TO TUNE THE FREQ POS WHERE GND CTL IS NORMALLY STORED FROM 121.7 TO 121.9. I THEN REMEMBER CALLING GND CTL AND REQUESTING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. I REMEMBER HEARING THE CTLR SAY TAXI TO RWY 18L. ANOTHER ACFT WAS ALREADY TAXIING TO THE SAME RWY AND WE FOLLOWED APPROX 100 YARDS BEHIND HIM. HE COMPLETED HIS RUN-UP AND DEPARTED AS WE COMPLETED OUR RUN-UP. WE THEN CALLED READY FOR DEP. THE LCL CTLR THEN INFORMED US THAT THE GND CTLR SAID THAT WE HAD NOT RECEIVED A TAXI CLRNC AND WARNED US THAT; 'THAT COULD CAUSE US PROBS IN THE FUTURE.' HE THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF. WE DISCUSSED IT BRIEFLY AND BOTH DISTINCTLY REMEMBER CALLING FOR TAXI CLRNC AND RECEIVING THAT CLRNC. BEFORE CONTACTING DEP CTL; I INFORMED THE LCL CTLR THAT WE BELIEVED WE HAD RECEIVED AND COMPLIED WITH THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. THIS INCIDENT DID NOT CAUSE ANY TFC PROBS AND I AM ONLY SUBMITTING THIS RPT AS PROTECTION SHOULD THE CTLR FEEL IT NECESSARY TO TAKE ACTION.
