Synopsis

PLT OF AN SMA SEL INADVERTENTLY LANDED IN A FIELD BETWEEN THE RWY AND TXWY COVERED WITH SNOW; RESULTING IN THE ACFT FLIPPING OVER ON ITS BACK.

Narrative

FOLLOWING A STANDARD VFR APCH PATTERN (R TFC) TO RWY 19 AT TRUCKEE ARPT; I LANDED MY AIRPLANE IN THE 3 FT DEEP SNOW COVERED FIELD THAT SEPARATE THE RWY FROM THE TXWY. THE AIRPLANE PITCHED FORWARD ABRUPTLY AFTER A NORMAL TOUCHDOWN ATTITUDE AND LANDED BOTTOM UP IN THE SNOW. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO MYSELF OR MY PAX; BOTH OF WHO WERE SECURED BY THE SEAT BELTS AND SHOULDER HARNESS. I RECEIVED A WX BRIEFING BEFORE DEPARTING MY HOME BASE; CA51 ARPT. I WAS INFORMED THAT TRK WAS CLOSED AND I SELECTED RENO AS MY DEST. WHILE ENRTE ON FLT FOLLOWING I WAS ADVISED BY ATC (SACRAMENTO APCH) THAT TRK WAS OPEN AND TO CONTACT FLT SVC FOR FURTHER INFO. I CONTACTED MARYSVILLE RADIO AND WAS ADVISED THAT TRK WAS OPEN WITH LIGHT SNOW AND ICE ON THE RWY AND POOR BRAKING ACTION. I AMENDED MY DEST WITH ATC TO TRK. APPROX 5 MI W OF TRK I CONTACTED TRK UNICOM AND WAS ADVISED OF THE SAME RWY CONDITIONS AND RWY 19 IN USE. I INQUIRED IF OTHER ACFT HAD LANDED AT THE ARPT SINCE IT OPENED THAT MORNING AND THE RESPONSE WAS AFFIRMATIVE. I CONTINUED INBOUND ENTERING THE PATTERN AT 7000 FT ON A 45 DEG FOR R TFC TO RWY 19. WHEN I TURNED BASE I PERCEIVED THE RWY ON MY L AS A PARALLEL TXWY TO THE ONE ON MY R AND ALIGNED THE PLANE FOR LNDG ON THE SNOW COVERED FIELD IN BETWEEN. I BELIEVE I WAS PREDISPOSED TO LOOK FOR A SNOW COVERED RWY BASED ON THE PREVIOUS RPTS. AT NO TIME DURING THE APCH OR LNDG DID I PERCEIVE ANYTHING WAS WRONG. THE VISUAL PICTURE OF THE APCH FIT MY MENTAL IMAGE. IN RETROSPECT; I BELIEVE THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF I OVERFLEW THE ARPT AND IDENTED THE TXWY AND RWY AND OTHER FEATURES OF THE ARPT ENVIRONMENT. IN ADDITION; DURING FINAL APCH; I SHOULD HAVE CONFIRMED THAT I WAS LNDG ON THE RWY BY IDENTING THE RWY MARKINGS; INCLUDING THE RWY NUMBER AND CTRLINE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THESE WERE VISIBLE AT THE TIME OF MY ATTEMPTED LNDG; BUT IN THE FUTURE I WOULD NOT LAND ON A RWY IF THESE WERE NOT VISIBLE.
