RPTR FO WAS UNAWARE OF CLRNC RECEIVED WHILE HE WAS OUT OF THE COCKPIT. THE CAPT THOUGHT HE HAD TOLD THE FO OF THE CLRNC; BUT HADN'T. CONSEQUENTLY; RPTR FO; PF; WAS UNABLE TO MAKE XING RESTR ASSIGNMENT. POOR COCKPIT COM CRM.
FLT WAS ENRTE DEN-BOS. SO LEFT COCKPIT FOR BLUE ROOM; FOLLOWED BY FO THEN CAPT. FO WAS PF AND WAS PROCEEDING ALONG J82 TO ALB WHEN HE LEFT COCKPIT. UPON RETURN; CAPT LEFT COCKPIT AS FO WAS SEATED. FO WAS UNAWARE THAT ATC HAD CLRED FLT DIRECT GDM DURING HIS ABSENCE (CAPT LATER STATED HE THOUGHT HE HAD TOLD HIM). FO WAS DSNDING AIRPLANE TO FL240 TO GET OUT OF BUMPY AIR (HAND-FLYING) AND WAS GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE. WHILE LEVELING OFF; CHANGING FREQS AND RPTING IN; CAPT RETURNED TO FLT DECK. FO PROCEEDED TO TELL CAPT OF FREQ CHANGE WHEN ZBW TOLD FLT TO CROSS BRONC INTXN (15 E GDM) AT 11000 FT WITH NO SPD RESTR. FO COMPUTED DSCNT DISTANCE AND TOLD CAPT HE WOULD START A HIGH SPD DSCNT (FLT WAS LATE) 25 DME W GDM; AT WHICH TIME CAPT STATED YOU'RE NOW ONLY 5 W. FO THEN REALIZED FOR THE FIRST TIME THAT CAPT HAD SWITCHED HIS NAV TO GDM (DURING HIS ABSENCE) AND WAS HIGH. FO PULLED THROTTLES TO IDLE AND STARTED TO PULL SPD BRAKES FOR DSCNT WHEN CAPT STATED; 'YOU WON'T NEED THOSE; YOU'LL STILL BE DOWN WITH ROOM TO SPARE.' FO THEN JUST DSNDED ON THE BARBER POLE (MODE B) WHILE HE RECOMPUTED HIS DSCNT (FIGURING THE CAPT WAS RIGHT) WHEN HE REALIZED PASSING FL180 THAT HE WOULD NOT MAKE THE XING; EVEN WITH SPD BRAKES FROM THAT POINT; AND TOLD THE CAPT SO WHILE HE PULLED OUT THE BRAKES. CAPT THEN TOLD CTR THAT FLT WOULD BE HIGH AT XING BUT 'WOULD DO OUR BEST' WITH NO REPLY FROM BOS. FLT CROSSED 2000 FT HIGH WITH NO WORDS FROM CTR. NO TFC CONFLICT OBSERVED.
